Lenovo X61 and Windows XP and tablet buttons

We had to downgrade this laptop from Vista to XP due to certain
administrative limitations in Vista (ie you have to be a member of Domain
Admins to do ANYTHING useful on the system...it was too much of a pain, so we
downgraded).

We put a copy of Windows Tablet on it from the MS Licensing collection we
maintain.

I have downloaded all the optional software from Lenovo, but I canNOT get
the tablet screen buttons working, neither will the display automatically
switch orientations when the screen is turned.

I only got the pen to work by downloading the drivers directly from Wacom,
and I've just been having a hell of a time getting what I would consider to
be normal tablet functionality out of the unit.

But the tablet buttons are what concern me the most right now. Does anyone
have any clue about what I need to do to get these working? I know it's not
a hardware problem, as it was working fine in Vista before we downgraded it.

Re: Lenovo X61 and Windows XP and tablet buttons

Tablet buttons are usually implemented as a HID driver that you probably
wont find on Windows XP's Windows Update. You'd need to get them from the
manufacturer. Once the HID driver is in place, the Tablet PC control panel
applet should work as expected and allow you to remap the buttons.

<rant> Also, I think your assessment of Vista is probably based on very
poorly written applications and group policies that are not Vista's fault.
Being a member of "domain admins" offers no additional local priviledges
than the local administrator. And any application that requires you to be an
administrator to do "anything useful" is a badly written application that is
ignoring recommended "best practices" that have been in place since Windows
2000 days. Instead of downgrading to XP and blaming Vista, we should all be
nagging the authors of these applications to fix their broken code so that
the Windows experience as a whole just works better. </rant>

Re: Lenovo X61 and Windows XP and tablet buttons

I am in the same situation...downgrade to XP and the buttons are the only
component not working. Our Lenovo rep recommended these drivers:

I have not gotten them to work at all. Just as you had to, I went to the
manufacturer's site for drivers for the pen itself. I've spent hours on the
phone with Lenovo Gold Support, but none of them truly know how to solve the
problem. If you do find a solution/driver that actually works, please post
it here.

Thanks,
