TC1000 hangs without warning - frequently

I have a TC1000 (+256mb upgrade) and every now and again the ****ed
thing just freezes, hangs; all that remains is a slide to the left for
5 seconds, for a power reset.
Machine restarts no problem thereafter. But nothing in Event Viewer or
anything from Operating System to say as to why this happened.

I have noticed this hang condition occur after I performed a full
System Restore using the provided CD's from Compaq, without any
subsequent software installed.

This can happen when using the nipple mouse (undocked) or when in the
dock and using the Pen.

Noticably once this hang occurs, network link light activity
continues, and normally within approx 20 seconds the internal fan
starts at what must be its highest rpms as it is very audible.

I have opened up the memory module and looked to make sure the memory
is seated firmly also.

Anyone experience similar problem.

I believe it to be hardware problem.

Any opinions please and thanks
Marty

Re: TC1000 hangs without warning - frequently

I have experienced similar effects many times. One time I wasnt sure I was
going to be able to reset it. Not sure what I was doing when these events
occurred as I was in a meeting or preparing for one and didnt have time to
really reflect on what was going on.

Re: TC1000 hangs without warning - frequently

I have a similar problem with a Toshiba 3505. I have spoken with the support
center but they have not been able to fix it by phone. I will probably have
to leave it at a service location. I have not had the opportunity of finding
a common issue among all the times it has frozen. The only thing that
apparently is common in most times is that it happens like one and a half
hours after switching on from stand-by. Someone told me that it could be
that the processor overheats or that the memory is faulty. They need a
hardware check.

Re: TC1000 hangs without warning - frequently

Update: I decided to remove the extra 256MB module so I am only
running on the supplied 256MB memory built-in. And have been running
like this for the last 2 weeks, during which time I would expect the
system to have hung several times - it has never once hung on me.

I am now going to contact HP with the strong assumption that memory is
to fault here. Whether it be the memory or maybe the interface module
the memory snaps into, is another story.

I disagree. My TC1000 has stood up rather well.It has even survived a few
rather nasty drops without problems. It may not be the most powerful beast
that exists, but it more than meets my needs.

And I'll second that, I've been using my TC1K for over a year and it gets
dragged everywhere, not missed a beat and it's form factor is still the best
of any tablet pc available. The Toshiba is too big, too heavy and too
expensive.

Re: TC1000 hangs without warning - frequently

Contacted HP support and first recommendation was to upgrade the BIOS
to OCT 2003 release from the manufactured released BIOS within the
machine. And also re-insert the memory back and see how it goes from
there.

Suck and see.....

Tc1000

Let me caviat all of my comments by saying I had absolutely no knowledge about tablets when I bought one, the TC1000. I thought it would fit my commuter lifestyle and doing homework.
I won't say that it stinks but I definetly got the lemon if the whole batch doesn't.
New out of the box the gui message told me "failed install etc" so I have to reload it within minutes of "unloading" it out of the boxes. It continued to hang up considerably so I sent it to the shop with a really quick turn around I might add. All they did was format the HDD.
After I got it back the lock up would continue and to reset I had to pull the battery. HP Support said to update the bios and that would cure my ills, it did not. It seemed to be better for a while but went right back to being crappy. Now it sits waiting on backorders from Tiger Direct where I bought it but I have been thinking about moving to the Fijitsu--any gouge on them?

Well,TD KNop. let me just say. every product does have its flaws. Every once in a while something is bound to fail in production. and it's just really ****ty that you're getting that one.
Written on a perfectly functioning TC1000 although the 512 Mb memory module I bought had to be taken out! Once I inserted it the computerrefused to start. I believe this tobe some sort of a software problem, and I'm going to try the Bios update. so thx Martin!
It is a weird thing, though....
