Q's on Asus RH2v UMPC

I've recently bought an Asus RH2v UMPC (the one running Vista) and have some
queries:

1. How to you turn on the GPS module? My GPS software can't detect it.
2. How do you switch to portrait mode? I tried the Display settings on the
Tablet PC Settings Control Panel, and got portrait, but could only see the
left hand side of the screen - it didn't use the R2Hv's resolution, and the
stylus pointer was offset from the screen arrow, which made it extremely
difficult to put things back to normal (i.e. back to landscape).

If anybody can help, I'd be grateful.

Thanks

Andrew

Re: Q's on Asus RH2v UMPC

As far as I can tell, my Asus R2H is not capable of Portrait orientation.
I'm running XP.

As for the GPS module, you need to get a file called device_switch.exe from
the Tools directory of your recovery CD. Run this program and there's a
checkbox to enable the GPS software. It should be on COM1 or COM2. It's
really annoying but you have to do this every time you wanna use the GPS.

Trying to rotate at 800x480 native res resulted in my being told the
resolution was too low. Rotating at 800x600 or 1024x600 emulation resulted
in the same experience you got, I believe. Using iRotate at 800x480 worked
the best for me. I did need to calibrate after rotating into portrait mode.

After you turn on the GPS receiver as per Josh's instructions - you may have
to wait for a bit before the it actually acquires the satellites.

Re: Q's on Asus RH2v UMPC

A long, long bit.

In my experience the GPS in this unit is horrible. I have a very difficult
time acquiring a signal at all, even outdoors in my trans am with the t-tops
off. It doesn't get any more wide open than that. Well maybe if it were a
convertible. :)

But seriously, the signal is bad at best. Instead I typically use a Pharos
iGPS plugged into a bluetooth jacket. This is one of the best GPS devices
I've ever used.

Re: Q's on Asus RH2v UMPC

Thanks all for the suggestions. Josh, I've found that the GPS seems to be
permanently on once I've run device_switch.exe. Perhaps running it again
turns it off again.

Thank you - interesting link. Actually, the first time I turned the GPS on
it acquired a fix in seconds (indoors, too, bit with a panoramic window
view). Thereafter it's been somewhat slower, but I've never waited more
than 5 minutes so far.

They are getting ready to shut off 2 and turn on 2 new GPS birds... maybe
that will help a little bit...

Re: Q's on Asus RH2v UMPC

To be honest, I've been saying since the beginning that I think my GPS
problems are due to a manufacturing problem. Almost like the antenna is not
wired at all. Opening the wing actually seems to make reception worse. But
it sounds like you have a good one. Hopefully mine is just a dud -
integrated GPS is such an awesome feature.

Re: Q's on Asus RH2v UMPC

GPS signals are very "line of sight"

For your first outings with gps, the best option is to go someplace
where you have a horizon to horizon view to establish your first "fix"
It may, but probably won't, work inside a building, so don't introduce
that problem at the beginning.

In addition to reception, gps has to "find itself" as it could be
anyplace on the planet, so, there is normally an "initialization"
process where you give it that information... normally a country, state,
city to allow it to "obtain" the satellites which will be in view at
that location at that _time_

The time setting is important as well... the computer clock time/date
needs to be set, but, more importantly, the timezone and daylight
settings in the windows clock settings need to be correct to assure tht
GMT time is accurate.

Even with the location and time set correctly and a good reception
point, it can take from several minutes to as much as half an hour to
get the first fix. Somewhere in this utility, you should be able to see
a "data stream" of characters which indicates that the gps is
functional, and, once you see that, sit on your hands watching the
"satellite screen" until you get a fix.

You won't need to do that again until you travel a significant distance
between uses... for example, use it in LA and fly to NY with it off, you
will need to reinit in new york.

I've been aware of what R2H reviewers and fellow owners have said about
their difficulties with the GPS, but didn't see much of this until a few
weeks ago. Normally, it would take a few minutes and work fine, but when
traveling in North Carolina, it took well over an hour for it to connect,
then it lost the connection, never to regain it. The R2H is my first and
only GPS-enabled device, and GPS has never called to me, the way it has
other technophiles; I didn't even know the R2H had GPS when I bought it.
Because of this, I don't know much about that topic; much of our trip was in
mountainous terrain, and the day was overcast, so perhaps those were
factors. At any rate, the device certainly picked up several satellites when
I went outside a few minutes ago and lost only one when I went inside and
sat in my usual chair near the "computer room" window.

Re: Q's on Asus RH2v UMPC

I've owned lots of GPS devices. I actually own about 4 now. I'm pretty
familiar with them and I can say the Asus's built-in GPS is by far the worst
and borders on unusable (for me). I was (am) super excited about integrated
GPS because it opens alot of doors as a software developer. But it needs to
work too.
