| Newbie On Tablet PC's ? Hello, Heard about Tablet PC's, but frankly am unfamiliar with them. Haven't see any actual Tablet PC's in the stores yet, but would like to know a bit more about them before I do. a. From what I can tell, other than the ability to write on the screen, they really don't have any advantage over a regular Laptop. Am I missing something (significant) here ? b. Do they tend to be lighter ? c. Do they tend to be cheaper ? What are their pros and cons, please, relative to Laptops ? Thanks, B. |

You can do Internet browsing on the bed or in the sofa like I'm doing now. It is the best for me. ;-) > Am I missing something (significant) here ? Yes > b. Do they tend to be lighter ? Yes. > c. Do they tend to be cheaper ? No. But my tabletpc costs me only 600 euros, new, an acer travelmate300. It is a normal laptop, but when you use the pen you have a TabletPC on it, also the screen can rotate and bend, then it looks like a book, with the screen in vertical, more easy to read the news like it f. e. > What are their pros and cons, please, relative to Laptops ? Well I don-like the touchpad in Laptops, and use the pen to open and close windows, click on links etc is fantastic .The cons ...depends on the model. |

| Re: Newbie On Tablet PC's ? To expand, there are tablet laptops (with keyboards and touch pads in addition to pen input) which are generally equivalent to regular laptops with the same specs and tablet based "slates" which don't have keyboards or folding screens and are smaller and lighter. There are also umpc's (ultra mobile pc's) which are even smaller and use a different pressure based stylus input method The primary difference is that you can use them standing and use "drawing input" examples, sketching a worksite, drawing flow charts or marking up a photograph. they are more expensive since that contain additional hardware and technology and tend to be more powerful than equivalent laptops, faster processors, more ram, etc. Beverly Howard [MS MVP-Mobile Devices] |

| Re: Newbie On Tablet PC's ? Hello Robert, Advantages: Natural Interface You don't have to type to enter data or interact with the machine. - This is incredibly significant (and it becomes more significant the more you think about it, or use it). Lighter? - Many Tablet PCs weigh in at under 5 pounds Less Expensive? - Generally not. Because many of the machines are in the light to ultra-light category, you are paying a premium for size and weight. - Hardware to support the touch and ink experience adds to the cost.
