Outlook pen signature

My inked signature looks OK until it's receieved, when
it's in a black box. Any ideas?

I'm using HTML as my e-mail format, and I created it in
Word as the Outlook editor. No sure what you mean by how
I am sending it - it's part of an automatically appended
signature block.

That's what I meant, using Outlook. You're appending it, and not inserting, so it sounds like the setup in Outlook for your signature isn't quite correct. I know this isn't Outlook, but Outlook Express, so I'm inserting my "signature." In Outlook, I believe you need to use the Advanced Edit portion of creating a signature, which becomes an HTML file. For those reading in plain text, this won't appear, but using HTML here for the example to add my signature:
