| Booting Toshiba Tablet PC Issue May I clarify and ensure that Toshiba Tablet PC (3500 or newer) would not be able to boot from external USB CD-ROM drive because of hardware problem, not OS problem? If it's hardware problem, will MS proceed any action to OEM like Toshiba regarding of this issue? Since this will destroy for consumers' trust in Tablet PC market. Thanks in advance for all of your comments. |

| Re: Booting Toshiba Tablet PC Issue As far as I am aware, it isn't a hardware problem, it's a design specification. I think the reason it won't boot from a usb cdrom drive is because you need to enable legacy support for usb devices in the bios for usb support outside of windows. Try it and see if it works. It may not work at all tho becuase I have a Protege 3500 with a Storix usb cd drive and my tablet is incapable of booting off of it. Check the manufacturer's site for your cd drive to see if it supports that. Good luck. -- Hermes |

| Re: Booting Toshiba Tablet PC Issue Seem I have not luck to boot from external USB CD-ROM, unless having buy a dock station from Toshiba. So, this is what's Toshiba strategy to sell more products to consumer? And no one at Toshiba would say something on their support web site regarding of this issue. Well, I was a loyal customer, had bought PocketPC 740 from them and finally got no upgrade from PPC 2002 to 2003. Very upset for Toshiba!! "Gary A. Booting is a matter for the hardware - there is no OS as yet, apart from the BIOS. Mine boots from the Toshiba optional CD drive (which in fact came along with mine), which plugs into the PC Card slot. It does not boot from a third party USB DVD drive - though the manual includes mention of booting from a Toshiba accessory USB floppy drive. -- Alex Nichol MS MVP (Windows Technologies) Bournemouth, U.K. Alexn@mvps.D8E8L.org (remove the D8 bit) |

| Re: Booting Toshiba Tablet PC Issue Just for the record, I am using a Toshiba M200 with the Toshiba USB2.0 DVD/CD-RW external drive (Toshiba model number PA3352U-1CD2 Rev 344). I used the Toshiba Console (found under Start Menu / Toshiba / Utilities) to set my boot priority to be CD-ROM->LAN->HDD->FDD. I then inserted the Toshiba Recovery and Applications/Drivers DVD and rebooted my system. It booted directly to the DVD. I also tried with a Windows Server 2003 installation DVD and that worked fine also. -- Gary A. | Re: Booting Toshiba Tablet PC Issue I was the one who posted what Toshiba customer service told me but I kept digging and I found a DVD drive that is PCMCIA based and so I was finally able to boot using the restore CD. If anybody is interested these are the part, # and details of the drive: PA3246U TOSHIBA EXTERNAL SLIM DVD/CD Mfg Part #: PA3246U-1DVD $149.00 Although I was able to fix my problem I strongly believe that not clearly informing customers that the only "Restore" media is a DVD, with no CD option available is wrong , unfair and unprofessional bur as long as MS will not release a boxed version of the OS we will be at the mercy of these "Hardware producers". | Re: Booting Toshiba Tablet PC Issue Stefano wrote: >Although I was able to fix my problem I strongly believe that not clearly >informing customers that the only "Restore" media is a DVD, with no CD >option available is wrong , I think that statement is wrong Mine came with restore *CD*s and in fact with the optional PC card based CD drive. And I had occasion to use these soon after it arrived. Toshiba offer a 'convert to NTFS' and I had not expected that they would put out the system on a FAT 32 drive formatted so that this gave 512 byte clusters. I was shocked when I ran the restore disk to discover that it uses an image of a Win98 boot floppy to start things off and do the formatting I see no point in putting out a DVD when one or two CDs is big enough -- Alex Nichol MS MVP (Windows Technologies) Bournemouth, U.K. Alexn@mvps.D8E8L.org (remove the D8 bit) |

| Re: Booting Toshiba Tablet PC Issue - Bottom Line?? So the bottom line is either buy USB CD/DVD or docking station from Toshiba? Thant is fuc...in resolution for ~3000 device? Well, I thought that toshiba did itself when they screwed up e740 users with PPC2003 upgrade but this is creme la creme, really.... seems to me that Motion will get my money, if for nothing but for me feeling good for making Toshiba poorer for 3000... yes, nobody from Toshiba will cry, I know but this time I won't either :-)))))))))))))))))))))))))))))) Steve Thangmanosopa wrote: > May I clarify and ensure that Toshiba Tablet PC (3500 or newer) would not be > able to boot from external USB CD-ROM drive because of hardware problem, not > OS problem? > > If it's hardware problem, will MS proceed any action to OEM like Toshiba > regarding of this issue? I know the feeling - I had a Toshiba E740 as well, and also have the Toshiba 3500 tablet - unbootable via USB, of course. :( Motion will likely be my next tablet purchase. | Re: Booting Toshiba Tablet PC Issue - Bottom Line?? yes, the 3500 boots from the 16 bit PCMCIA version drive offered. As far as a docking station for it, negatory. :) Nothing for the 3500. And the 3500 doesn't have a parallel port, so that option is out too. :) Someone about a year ago reported success with a specific Lite-ON USB drive, and also with a SONY CD drive. I never had the opportunity to purchase the models in question and test though.
