I previously saw some discussion about issues relating to new tablets,
including such things as (1) the improvement of the Centrino spec to cover
higher speed wireless, either on 802.11a or g, (2) the availability of
newer, faster Pentium M processors and even (3) the release of the Windows
tablet service pack.

Am interested in the current informed speculation on these matters. Also
wondering if, for example, such developments suggest a broader range of
offered models, with additions to, say, the Toshiba, Motion or HP lines.

I think you are beginning to see the 2nd generation tablets already. Some
feature Wireless-G, most have PentiumM processors and the Toshiba M200 has a
1400x1050 resolution screen.
