Is there a program that....

I use Sketchpad a lot in my classroom while teaching mathematics. I was
wondering if there is a program where I can switch to say "pen mode" and
right on my screen (in the sketchpad document) and then I can switch back to
a normal mode and modify the shapes with my mouse. More less, I'm looking
for a program where I can write anywhere at anytime on my screen where the
program disables the typical mouse features of clicking, dragging, etc and
allows you to write. Thanks!

Re: Is there a program that....

maybe OneNote 2007?

It has some mathematical object and can switch between inking and mousing.
Not sure if that is what you want.

I believe RitePen allows you to do that.

Re: Is there a program that....

Try Microsoft's Ink desktop in its "tablet Tools" package-free
download. It makes your desktop an inkboard, so you can write on that
and then go back to your sketchpad.
Or download Inkyboard--also free. It's a kind of very basic white
board.
Or just draw in MS Word and label as you would any document.

But I"m sure exactly what it is you want to do.

Re: Is there a program that....

Geometer's Sketchpad.... you can construct circles and teach a lot of
geometry through the program. What I would like to do is actually write on
top of a circle I constructed in the program. I have found, since I posted
this, Annotate Pro, which is OK, its not fast enough and the writing is kind
of jagged when compared to windows journal. I love windows journal, but it
only allows me to write in that program and not any other programs like
sketchpad, or just writing over a window such as this internet window you are
reading. I do have the add ons to write in my MS office programs. They are
OK as well. I had that when I try to erase on my MS office however. It does
erase just what the eraser is over, but whatever I was writing in that one
stroke. In other works, I could color the interior of a circle in MS Word
without ever letting the pen off the screen (one continuous stroke) and if I
went to erase just a small portion of the colored area, it would erase
everything. I'm blabbering on, but thanks for the help.

Re: Is there a program that....

Why don't you try JustWrite Office:
http://www.justwriteoffice.com/trial.asp?lang=en its very straightforward.
when you install (no Vista support) there is a stand alone tool Screen
Markup. Its a kind of similar to Journal and has some more features. You can
crop images and make figures and annotations on them. But be aware there is
no Vista support.

Re: Is there a program that....

Mr Craft,

First off, you are not going to find any program that allows you to write
IN any other program. Program A cannot just simply add features like that
to program B. It just doesn't work that way with computers. (OK yes, it
is possible sometimes, but it requires program A to be specially written
just for program B and you can usually only add simple things like
buttons to execute macros of things that were already possible in program
B. Or if program B is written to accept plugins and program A is a plugin
written specifically for program B. But you can't just write a program
that will add features as sophisticated as ink annotation to any other
program that happens to be installed on a computer. It just ain't gonna
happen.)

Now, if you simply want to be able to write over the top of your existing
program for purposes of illustrating something to your class, then this
may be possible. I haven't heard of anything doing this but it would be a
relatively simple matter to create a program that covered the entire
screen but was mostly transparent. Then you could write in that overlay
program and the only thing that would show from the overlay program would
be the ink. This would have a couple of problems. If you wanted to
interact with the underlying program then the overlay program would go to
the back and you wouldn't see the ink. Also, if you scrolled the page in
the underlying program, the overlay program wouldn't scroll with it. So
the overlay program would really only be useful for temporarily making a
point then erasing it and making a different point.
