Non-functioning url file association after IE update

After downloading and installing an Internet Explorer update, I was suddenly
unable to open a url in any non-Microsoft program. Instead, clicking on the
link produces the following error message:

This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this
action. Create an association in the Folder Options control panel.

In Folder Options, it appears that everything is correct as Internet
shortcut is associated with IE...so what do I do now? Please note: I am
having no such problem on my backup computer on which IE has not been
updated. Please advise.

Laurie

Re: Non-functioning url file association after IE update

Laurie, it is probably something which changed in IE on that system. You
might check with the IE MVPs in the
microsoft.public.internetexplorer.general newsgroup. Make sure you list
which version of IE you're running.

broken *.lnk file association in IE 7

Hi Chris,

I appreciate your answer...but don't know where to find the
microsoft.public.internetexplorer.general newsgroup. By the way, I'm using
IE 7 and have already tried downloading the LNK file association fix from
Doug Knox (http://www.dougknox.com/xp/file_assoc.htm). But no luck. Any
other suggestions?

Laurie

Re: broken *.lnk file association in IE 7

Okay. First, the complete set (hundreds) of Microsoft newsgroups are
available by setting up either Windows Mail (Vista) or Outlook Express (or
any other news reader you prefer) to access the msnews.microsoft.com news
server. It is free, no sign-in, no password and available no matter what
your Internet Service Provider might be.

About the IE problem, I'd suggest you use a Restore Point from within System
Restore to go to a date previous to the suspected "update" issue, and see if
that will fix the issue. It could just be (though mainly unlikely) that the
download was corrupted or perhaps didn't install properly.

I don't know what you're referring to here. I posted suggestions, and am
not the one with the problems. 8-)
