nVidia Driver Update

I've searched far and wide but apparently have been searching in the wrong
place(s). Is there a newer set of drivers for geForce cards, or are we
stuck with 96.85? Any word on when a new release might happen? My machine
scored ~4.9 on average with nothing lower than 4.6 as far as being Vista
"ready".

Everything performs perfectly fine, except games. Full screen games running
at 1600x1200 are flat out choppy. The framerate is subpar although when the
frames are actually rendered, they appear fine. The only thing I can think
of is drivers, as I know the exact same hardware/games work perfectly fine
on Windows XP Pro. I've tried disabling Aero, shutting down every optional
application, all to no avail. Plenty of free RAM (2GB) so that doesn't
appear to be the bottleneck. So in my guesstimation it's either at the OS
level or simply underperforming drivers. Any way to tell for sure? I've
tried using 96.85 and uninstalling it and just using the native Windows
drivers, no luck with either...very very choppy.

Thanks,
James

You're lucky! My GeForce 6800 BSODs all the time, always because of
nvlddmkm.sys...

Re: nVidia Driver Update

Be careful because when I "quoted"the info on the nvidia web site regarding
the only driver is beta version 96.85 I got told that the latest version is
96.86(included in Vista RTM).
So as far as I am concerned, yes, the only"latest"version IS 96.85.
As it says on the nvidia site is is beta.

Re: nVidia Driver Update

The Driver's Bundled With RTM (96.86) Are Newer Than Nvidia's RC2 Driver
(96.85), Just FYI.

P.S. I Am Using The 96.86 Driver's With My Nvidia GeForce 6800, And Have No
BSOD's Whatsoever, Also Just FYI.

Re: nVidia Driver Update

Mark--

If you are getting a spate of BSODs, this makes me wonder if the driver that
you're using, even if it has RTM'd, and is the latest is the most suitable
one for your card.

I know traditionally, the later driver released will have better features or
improvements but...

You may want to call Tech support for who makes your card, (in my experience
unusually competent for tech support) or hit the Nvidia or some gamer forum
groups that are heavy into the detial of those cards.

The reason I say that is that on one box, for example, a 7600OC 512MB OC
BFG, there are about 5 or 6 driver choices. But according to the card
manufacturer they are collecting reports of lockups during some games, BSODs
and freezes with some drivers. The latest driver is not necessarily working
out to be the best experience right now. I went with their choice for
stability and haven't been disappointed. I may try some other drivers and
you can try different drivers, but at least the groups, or the tech support
can give you the perspective of more people on your driver.

CH

In fact, I would disagree. If there were no nVidia drivers in Vista I'd have
shrugged my shoulders and bought another graphics card by now...

Which I'm pretty much resigned to doing anyway...

It certainly is. nVidia have really dropped the ball on this one...

Re: nVidia Driver Update

The irony is that all through the beta I felt that it was the nVidia drivers
that were better than the ATI ones. By RC1 it seemed to turn around. The
same thing happened with the Marvel Yukon NIC drivers.

I'll bow to your superior knowledge on that one, as I didn't really start
looking at Vista in any great depth until RC1 - simply had no business need
to...

Ah - well, maybe they won't feature at the top of my "next to be bought"
list...

Re: nVidia Driver Update

The one in Vista is still a beta driver.
Hardly any functions.
nVidia will release a proper diver once Vista goes on sale.

You may still have to wait for Vista drivers even with a brand new card..

Re: nVidia Driver Update

Vista goes on sale in my town in public stores in 12 hours. So probably a
little later. I use Beta drivers, but again I check the driver forums to
get the most stable one. It works for me. There are choices for every high
end Nvidia card.
