Message for MSN Premium users concerning MSN Premium on Vista

I just talked to MSN Tech Support and received permission to pass the
following on to the ng. I am only the messenger.

The correct software for Vista is MSN 9.5. Please do not install previous
versions on Vista.

9.5 is fully Vista compatible and the software is ready. It is the same
software that XP users are now using. There is not a separate 9.5 just for
Vista.

Although MSN 9.5 is now available, it only installs on versions of Windows
through XP. The problem is the installer, not MSN 9.5 itself. It cannot
yet be installed on Vista from http://membercenter.msn.com/download.aspx.

The reason is that http://membercenter.msn.com/download.aspx downloads the
msninst.dll for XP and earlier and not the version of msninst.dll needed for
Vista. You will get an error stating that msninst.dll could not be
registered and the installer will exit if you try to use
http://membercenter.msn.com/download.aspx to install MSN 9.5 on Vista.

There is no supported workaround. If you find one, good for you, but MSN
will not support it.

What is going on is that MSN has finished the software but not the download
website. MSN is working on upgrading
http://membercenter.msn.com/download.aspx and when finished there will be a
link for Vista users that will download the correct MSN installer for Vista.

MSN will send an email to MSN users when this link goes live.

Please don't shoot the messenger. ;)

Re: 2500 Plus Native/Intrinsic Icons in Vista

ICONS INTRINSIC IN VISTA/XP ---Near 2500>More in Vista

Andre if you're an icon fetishest

1) As you probably know every Windows since 95 has hundreds of intrinsic
icons, but vintage Win 2K and now Vista has more of them in the .dlls in
System 32 you can try many many sources to collect icons that come default
with the OS, and then a whole other paradigm where you can acquire icons in
folders via downloads, program folders, zips, new versions of Win Media
Player for example, Office, etc.

2) The butterfly icon will show up if you make a new folder in Vista and
then right click folder>customize Tab>Change Icon Button>Look for Icons in
File>%SystemRoot%\system32\SHELL32.dll.

3) You can then also hit the Browse button and when you're taking a couple
minute break>click on each of the .dlls in there. Many will yield icons,
and of course there are new .dlls because of the new OS Vista in
shell32.dll. What I do with them is to copy the name of each .dll that
yeilds icons into something like notepad, etc. with a quick description of
what icons are there.

4) Icons are in downloaded programs' folders wherever you might have them.
If Vista were on C:\> then yocould search C:\ and C:\Windows and
C:\Users\Profile\Downloads and C:\Program Files and C:\Windows\System32 and
many others.

5) Also you can add favicon.ico onto any url and many yield an icon>even a
MSFT site occasionally, and then change the name of the favicon and tuck it
into a folder to preserve it.

6) When you right click a folder>properties>customize tab>change icon
button>you can browse to any of these locations.

5) Make a folder for the icons and call it whatever you want. You can
collect the icons and drag them into that folder after you change the name.

6) For some reason in Vista's latest 3 or 4 builds through RTM, it is not
allowing you to change a shortcut icon and make that stick this way, and I'm
working on a workaround for that. It will let you do this as usual to a
folder.

RE: Message for MSN Premium users concerning MSN Premium on Vista

Hi: You will find my problem in this newsgroup under the heading "MSN Premium
won't install". This is now April 17, 2007, and they still haven't fixed it.
I called MSN Premium twice, and their tech support indicates you have to
download version 9.5. I did, and I made or tried to make it compatible with
Windows XP SP2. Still doesn't work. I was just wondering if you had since had
any better luck than me.
