| iTunes kills DVD/CD-ROMS Every time iTunes is installed it kills both of my DVD/CD-ROMS drives in RTM x86. There are yellow marks on them in device manager. Uninstall/reinstall does not work. I've had this problem and reported it since RC1 x86! Anybody else had this problem? THX Frank |

| Re: iTunes kills DVD/CD-ROMS--Really? I have never had it with several builds of Vista through so called RTM. I mean as far as I know it's the build Jim Allchin is so exhuberantly blogging about--does freedom from MSFT enter into this dynamic? 1) What do you do to fix it? If it kills all of your DVD or CD ability how do you get it back? Do you system restore to before you installed Itunes? I know what Itunes is--it's part of that thing that the release of Zune really gave a boost to in early November beyond anything Steve Jobs could have imagined as an add campaign. 2) The vast majority of the time although there are a few other causes all chronicled in so called MSKBs (not many written by the lazy Redmondistas for Vista are there--they want the money for the OS but they don't want to write MSKBs on all the glitches they escrowed and RTMd) some software has deposited upper or lower filter values in your registry. I'm not aware though of anyone reporting that Itunes does it. I see those filter values on peoples' machines often when they can't get the DVD or CD to play, write, start, or shutdown--any or all of the above. It's described in this article (they haven't gotten around to taking the Beta 2 off the title and putting RTM on it have they?) or better still they could name it "whatevah we done shipped as an OS before or in da futcha at Redmond" CD-ROM drive or DVD-ROM drive appears to be missing after you install Windows XP or Windows Vista Beta 2 http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;320553 I am not aware of a scientific population of boxes studied where the side effect of installing Itunes puts those filter values in or otherwise interferes with CD/DVD functionality, but since you don't install Itunes that often, and since Itunes isn't updated that often, then if the filter values are there, it only takes seconds to delete them off your box. Good luck, CH Let's focus on exactly who is and who isn't participating in sending people to Iraq and if every single household is not willing to do that, and waste time and lives, let's get the hell out now. Every day that this is posponed is indicative of a stupid and indifferent people who refuse to let their so called non-oversight practicing bribe taking self-indulgent leadership all of whom don't have skin in the game in Iraq run their treasure and country's lives and families right into the ground. If I were a terrorist watching the spectacle of this stupidity, I'd be ecstatic. It just RTM'd and only for known issues MS can publish reports. And, yes, publishing KBs takes time as published content needs to be reviewed So if you want to see KBs, you better shut it and start reporting issues you see, kid. | Re: iTunes kills DVD/CD-ROMS--Lazius Lol say what? Lazius Da Big Rant Greek Domain asked some questions ( and made the usual simplistic knee jerk interpretation that all people who offer constructive criticism of MSFT or Vista or Office are saying they are bad and he added his own cute grunts. Psst Lazius Da Big Greek Rant--got news for you. A common demonimator of most MSFT haters is that they do rant, and often but certainlynot always have a superficial grasp of Windows and MSFT. There are some great developer and other critiques in r comments on MSDN and Technet blogs. He opined that "MS is baaaadd" and grunted x 2. What are the reasons you opinned that and then grunted? I try to butress all my statements with specifics so I'm sure yours will follow. Lazius on the cutting edge of MSFT watching informed us that Vista just RTM'd. Noted. It's been in play for over 6 years and the Beta ran since July 2005. Beta 2 is months old and that's the latest MSKB name. As to the premise that publishing KBs takes time--not much and the same issues have been in Vista more or less that didn't get fixed and they refused to fix since July of 2005. It's now November of 2006. That's about 16 months. Technet and MSDN are Vista information depleted sites. The MSKBs are sparse when one puts Vista in the search. One is going to have to resort to books that are 3rd party like Ed Bott's to obtain substantive info on Vista and right now, much of the info on Vista come from non-MSFT blogs although to give them credit they deserve the softies are blogging actively on MSDN and technet blogs. I don't have a clue what you mean that "only for known issues lol can MSFT publish reports 'cause they been done knowin a whole hive load of issues for over a year that they done nothin about. You asked what I based the MSKB deficit on and the deficit of substantive articles on and implied why I might have said many times that the Vista Product Guide is written on third grade level as a very superficial cheerleading document. It's because I read all of them, and I think System Restore and Win RE deserve more than a one to two sentence notification that they exist which is all that's on MSFT sites now. Same with SFC in Vista. And Ranting Lazius' contribution to the proposed nexus between Ipods and some non-specified malfunction of CD/DVD drives from Frank remember him--the OP was missing. Is it in a Ranting Lazius post to follow? No go. The only thing that works is uninstalling iTunes, which is no big loss for me. Frank |

| Re: iTunes kills DVD/CD-ROMS Some times this can be caused by the program installing high and/or low filters. You can check in device manager. The only way I know to resolve it has been to remove the filters in the registry. Obviously you do not make any such changes without making a backup of the key you are changing, setting a restore point and checking all of your cd programs thoroughly after making the changes. Since then, Apple has released at least 2 builds of iTunes/Windows, and the problem did not repeat with RC2 or the RC2 Refresh. | Re: iTunes kills DVD/CD-ROMS Colin- I don't think anything in particular that I've seen with an exception in one area.--Aero conflicts but I've not seen these myself. I have a great time with the Nano and so I have been all over everything tips, etc. that is available from the Apple site. What I have seen widely including from Paul Thurrott but all over the place are reports of Itunes crashing Aero. I have had I tunes on several builds of Vista including RTM with Aero Glass, and Aero whichever and flip 3D working very well with no problems at all either with Aero or with using the optical drives. I have been burning a number of isos with it. Here are some examples of the aero Itunes conflict being reported that I am not seeing: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=210520 www.winsupersite.com/reviews/winvista_beta2_04.asp I also see reports of Vista installed on Macs, but I thought that the new bios in Macs wouldn't support Vista because of a decision MSFT made or maybe I should say Vista wouldn't support running on a Mac yet here it is: Vista Installed on an Intel Mac www.appleinsider.com/article.php?id=1665 - 54k CH "Colin Barnhorst" <colinbarharst(remove)@msn.com> wrote in message news:ekD$gNAEHHA.4312@TK2MSFTNGP06.phx.gbl... > What are the folks at Apple saying about iTunes and Vista compat? | Re: iTunes kills DVD/CD-ROMS Yes, as I recall iTunes is one of those programs that causes Aero to turn Glass off in order to "protect the user experience." I assume any of the other themes would also turn off Glass too. Apparently if it didn't the resulting screen would be disturbing. In any case, it is a Glass thing and not really Aero. Another program that I know of that causes the system to turn off Glass is Virtual PC 2004. VPC 2007 corrects that. Did I read somewhere that it is how a program uses DirectX that causes the disabling of desktop composition? One note of importance; it works just fine on my laptop (no areo-just basic) and on my other, triple boot machine (no areo either)with Vista x64 & x86 & XP Pro 64 Edition installed. When I have time, I'll reinstall it and spend some time with it. But as I said, no big loss to me. If I do come to any definitive conclusions, I'll be sure and post my findings. THX Frank |
