Has anyone had any luck getting Outlook Express to run on Vista or Windows
Mail to run on XP? I dual boot both OS's and would like to have my news
reader share the same store, so that threads I watch and messages I've read
stay in synch when booting the other OS. Since Windows Mail and Outlook
Express use different schemes to store messages, this will only work if I
can get one or the other to run on BOTH OS's.

I tried Thunderbird and it will work for this, but I can't get it to
consistently sort messages the way I like, so it's not a real solution.

Cannot be done.
OE needs XP OS and files...........
Windows Mail needs Vista
cannot cross use/run on OS like you said.
Windows Mail does not use dbx files and OE does not use the system that
Windows mail does.
Only common thing between both is .eml file
In OE you can save as .eml(a single email) and in Windows mail emails are
saved/stored as .eml files.
Unless a program is made for Vista then no way

You cannot run Windows Mail on XP or OE on Vista. They are two different
applications that use 2 different runtimes to work. The only thing to do
would be to use a program like Thunderbird that will work on both.

Does Vista have a compatibility mode that OE may run under?

for what stupid reason? In Windows Vista you have Windows Mail that's better
than OE

The reason is explained in the original post. The only "stupid" thing going
on in this thread is you attempting to answer a question you do not

You were told the reasons WHY it was not possible, is that not good enough?
TWO different OS, two different ways of handling and storing email and
account data, two different programs needing completely different files to
run...........
No way to export/import from/to each other.
Only common thing between both is the.eml file format.
Email in Windows Mail is stored as individual .eml files.
Email in OE is stored inside dbx files.

(and would never) call people who provided constructive input stupid, even
if it was clear they did not understand what was being discussed.

I have no desire to share a store between the two programs, that obviously
would not work for the reasons you restated. My goal is to get one of the
programs to run in both OS's and then have the same program use a common
store on both OS's. Anyway, I believe I am close to getting OE to work in
compatibiliy mode for Win98 under Vista. I'll post back here with results
if/when I get it working.

The only way you might get this to work would be to run Virtual PC in Vista
and then install XP or another downlevel OS that supports OE. You won't be
able to run OE in Vista itself.

An alternative might be WLMD, which will install in both XP and Vista and
you should be able to share its message store between the OSs. If you can
stand WLMD.
