Just had this pop up yesterday for no reason that I have been able to figure
out:

"To use all Microsoft Windows(R) features, such as all updates from Windows
Update; get the latest updates; and receive product support, your copy of
Microsoft Windows(R) must be validated as genuine."

There's a hyperlink attached that takes me to the WGA site
([url]www.microsoft.com/genuine)[/url], which I would like to say is completely useless.

Thus far, I've gone to the above site and used the "Validate Windows" link
which results in:

"Windows Validation Error
"[0x80080250]
"Unknown error encountered during Windows validation. The validation service
is unable to determine whether your copy of Windows is genuine. Please
validate again. If additional attempts result in validation errors you may
want to try again later."

With my right hand on my original, mint-condition Windows 95 CD, I swear
that I am using my own key which I received from Microsoft on this one and
only computer. I've not done anything to intentionally aggrivate WGA, so
might someone have seen this or know what has caused it?

Yup,
And people think SPP is o.k. by them!! LOL-until it happens to them;
like the poor poster; who got hassled through no fault of his own.

I had the same thing happen in XP. I had to pay MS Tech Support $30.00 to
get them
to help me fix it. It only took about 3 days of trying different things
before it started working
again. Nice thing is that in XP it only stops you from getting updates, but
in Vista it will
eventually prevent you from using your computer if you don't pay MS to get
it fixed. Whenever
they need money all they need to do is stop the validation from working and
let the cash roll in.
If you install Vista, they can hold you hostage and demand a ransom.

Reminds of the virus that went around holding people's personal files

Good evening everyone!

Just thought I'd let you know that the issue is still there. I've tried
about 10 times over the past 48 hours with the exact same response.

For the record, I've always been weary about WGA and the advanced
protections in Vista, but for free, I guess I can't complain too much. I
suppose I am soon to find out the wrath of a Vista unvalidated and will be
glad to post back with whatever happens. Hopefully this will serve as enough
of a warning to others, or at least a guide about what to expect when WGA
turns on you.

Thus far, I've been seeing the annoying dialog box at least twice a day. As
far as functionality is concerned, I don't seem to be able to access any of
the Control Panel portions of the system. If I go Start -> Control Panel, a
window flashes by, but is quickly closed before I can see what it is. Trying
to access the Control Panel through My Computer results in the "Control
Panel" link reverting the selection back to whatever was highlighted
previously. Thus far, I have been able to expand the Control Panel link
under My Computer, allowing me access to at least some of the Control Panel.
(sshhhh.... Don't tell Microsoft)

For the time being, I have not been rebooting or logging off (only locking
the screen), for fear that I may not be allowed back in. But I guess if
Vista wants me off bad enough, I'll get the boot soon enough.

The strange thing about all of this is that I hesitated to activate
(thinking that I might end up loading Vista on my other PC, thus not wanting
to waste this license). However, when it told me that I had 24 hours to
activate (around the two week mark), I activated and was told that all was
well. I wonder what happened....

P.S. "Have you tried later?" It has been my experience that whenever
something says to try later, it just means that something is screwed up and
no one botherred to write a good error message. :-) I promise I'll keep
trying though!

There is no charge for tech support from MS regarding WGA issues. Also the
regular charge for a support incident is $35 and has been for several years
now.

If you actually were charged then it was a mistake on the part of the CSR.

Captains log. T-Plus 3 days after the initial attack.

Reports show a total of six offensives by WGA/SPP. Our engineers came up
with an elaborate plan consisting of reversing some of their previous work in
Vista Services. According to their superiors, an enemy combanant known only
as the "Software Licensing" service was demoted to "Manual".

Upon reinstatement from Manual to Automatic, the enemy has made no advances.
appearances of the message have been reduced to zero, however the Control
Panel still will not load. Perhaps this is the work of another enemy which
simply utilized the timing of the WGA/SPP attack as a distraction. I have
some of my best men and women researching that aspect of the offensive as I
write this report.

For now, I'm ordering a stand down of the troops, however please remain
alert. Remember, keeping SPP and WGA in check is everyone's responsibility.
