Question Vista Bootloader

I have Vista build 5744 RC2 installed and I want to install Unbutu on a
spare partition
I'm not sure about Unbutu I have installed linux redhat a few years ago and
I remember it installed it's own bootloader

If this is also the case with Unbutu will it kill Vista's bootloader and
lock me out of it ?
I have also got XP mce 2005 installed on another partition as well and I
don't want to loose all my data or be locked out of it

I'd like to hear from anyone that has tried this

And find out if it is even possible to install Unbutu or does unbutu have to
be installed first and then Vista and Xp

RE: Question Vista Bootloader

Don't know if my original post went in so here it is again. You'll need to
load Ubuntu last unless you use a third party boot program. Vista doesn't
see the ubunta os but ubunta sees the windows os and lists it as windows in
it's bootloader.

RE: Question Vista Bootloader

Ubuntu works well with Windows XP Home with the Grub bootloader. I dont see
any reason why it should not work with Vista.
I have both XP and Vista RC1 on one disk with dual boot and am considering
installation of the new Kubuntu.
Kindly let me know if you are sucessful with dual boot of Vista and Ubuntu.
Thanks and Regards,

Re: Question Vista Bootloader

Yes I'm aware that works because the Grub bootloader sets "boot.ini" in it's
boot up process but vista uses a file called "BCD" for it's boot up and I'm
not sure the grub bootloader will recognise vista's BCD

I'm going to install vista on another pc then also load ubuntu on it and
I'll see how I go with that before I try it on my main pc

RE: Question Vista Bootloader

I have Ubuntu, Vista, and XP on one pc. The bootloader is Ubuntu's, which
gives me a choice for linux or windows. When you chose windows, it then
loads Vistaboot Pro, which gives a choice of Vista or XP.

Will:

If you want to have a single boot loader for all your OS's, I would
highly recommend BootIt NG (BING). I have not tried it with Linux (on my
TODO list) but it can boot all Windows OS's in exactly the same way, and
completely independently of each other. No need to know anything about
autoexec.bat, boot.ini, the BCD store or any of that stuff.

I do know that to use BING with Linux, you need to persuade your Linux
installation to put GRUB on the boot sector of the root partition, not
in the MBR. For most distributions this requires some kind of custom
installation.
