Re: Turning off DEP

Hi Steve,

Change the settings under the Control Panel/System/Advanced sytem
settings/Advanced tab/Performance settings/DEP tab. You can't turn it off,
but you can adjust that which it protects.

I keep running into Vista programs running because DEP shut it down and it
tells me to turn off DEP, but when I try to do so, it says DEP must be on
for this program. Anyway to turn DEP off altogether?

Re: Turning off DEP

Yes, but is turning it off a good idea? Better to adjust the system so that
it is working correctly than to disable something that is protecting it.

Re: Turning off DEP

I agree, Rick, but it appears, from the numerous posts on this subject int
he various newsgroups, that many, want to turn DEP off completely, as they
have done in Windows XP. Personally i don't have any trouble with DEP either
in Vista or XP.

Re: Turning off DEP

Am I missing something? I did this and it said that the operation completed successfully. Yet ieinstaller.exe and cleanmgr.exe still stop working in the middle with a warning that DEP has shut them down. Is there something I am supposed to write in there? I pasted the line verbatim.

Thanks a bunch. I should have done that as a matter of course. I have Defender and WindowsOneCare so DEP should be redundant. But if I want to turn it back on, would I repeat the process but say AlwaysOn?

Re: Turning off DEP

From what i can see from the command options it looks as if either 'nx
AlwaysOn' or 'nx OptIn' should do the trick. Both record 'the operation
completed successfully'
