microsoft intellimouse incompatability

I have the microsoft wireless keyboard and mouse. The mouse just froze two
days ago after having worked perfectly fine since Vista was installed. System
says intellipoint known incompatablity. Cannot uninstall, cannot update. Any
solutions anyone?

Re: microsoft intellimouse incompatability

Have you tried deleting the mouse in Device Manager and letting it find the
generic drivers when it reboots?
Was this an upgrade or clean install?

RE: microsoft intellimouse incompatability

I just installed the Wireless Desktop 6000 and it works with the default RC2
drivers. I don't have cutomization options that I do on XP with the included
software installed, but no freezes so far!

Nigel, I told you (or someone) once how to install the IntelliType
Pro/IntelliPoint software under Vista. I repeat them below, in case you
missed them.

First, know that the latest version of the Microsoft Mouse/keyboard
software is 5.5. Therefore, the software cannot be updated, since there is
not a newer version ANYWHERE, except in the hands of Beta testers.
Supposedly, there WILL be a newer version of the software released sometime
in December, which will be FULLY Vista-compatible.

Vista will ALWAYS say that 5.5 is "incompatible", IF you fail to follow
these directions. If you follow these directions, you should (usually) no
longer get "incompatibility" warnings from Vista.

In addition, you will be unable to install the software under Vista, UNLESS
you follow these simple directions.

Here is what to do:

1) Set Windows XP compatibility for the IntelliType Installer
("setupstb.exe"), electing to "Run as Administrator"
2) Set Windows compability for the IntelliPoint installer ("setupstb.exe"),
electing to "Run as Administrator".
3) Do NOT start the IntelliType/IntelliPoint software installations using
"setup.exe". Instead, use "setupstb.exe", AFTER setting XP compatibility
for the installer ("setupstb.exe").
4) After installing the software, and running it for the first time (either
using the Desktop shortcut the installer placed on your desktop or the
Start menu entry, and receiving the "Incompatible" warning, you MUST
a) Elect NOT to receive the warning again (check the box next to "do not
show this warning again" (or words to that effect -- My memory is sadly not
eidetic)
b) Elect to "Run Anyway".
c) Anytime you subsequently get the same warning, repeat (a) and (b)
above.
5) After this, simply continue to use your hardware and Mouse/keyboard
software as normal, and if you need to set one of the keys, follow the
simple directions in the keyboard and mouse programs themselves.

Some warning notes:
1) Do NOT attempt to reinstall the software WITHOUT following the simple
instructions above.
2) Do NOT attempt to start the installation using "setup.exe". If you do,
the installer will STOP, and REFUSE to go on any further. Using
"setup.exe" will ALWAYS result in the same way under Vista: Failure. To
install the software successfully, use "setupstb.exe" instead, following my
directions.
3) Do NOT try to change the simple instructions above, either their order,
or their content.
4) Do NOT ignore the simple instructions above.

If you listen to my advice, you will more than probably be a happy fellow.
If you don't, you are on your own.

(Sorry to sound so mean and "know-it-allish". I'm not trying to be. But I
know what I am speaking of, having faced this problem several times in the
last few months, and having conquered it. I simply want to help. I
believe these instructions are pretty complete. I am in my 60s, and my
memory is starting to fail a little. But I believe I've given pretty clear
instructions, leaving nothing out.

I too have Microsoft Keyboards and Mice, which I use fully under Vista (or
XP, or OS X), with no loss in function or usability, using the SAME
Microsoft Software as you and others, and WITHOUT hacking the OS or using
third-party software.

Until Microsoft releases IntelliType Pro/IntelliPoint 6.1 software in
December, this is the ONLY way I know of where one can get his Microsoft
keyboards and mice working to their fullest potential using the 5.5 version
of the software under Vista.

NOTE: I have NOT tried this under Vista using any version of the Microsoft
Mouse/Keyboard software earlier than 5.5, so I do not know if one will
obtain the same results (or even if the procedure can be followed) using
earlier versions of the software.

I hope anyone with the same problem will have the same good luck I have
had.

But, of course, since Vista IS still a Beta OS, neither I nor Microsoft can
guarantee this. Perhaps I just got lucky. Perhaps I didn't. Only Luck
herself knows for sure.

Try my method for obtaining full functionality of your Microsoft keyboard.
I gave these instructions to the OP (Nigel). You may be happy.

I know that this works because I have it running on my 64bit version, but I
tried with 32bit and couldn't get it going. It would get as far as "Select
Mouse" but there would be no list of mice to select, just a picture of the
bottom of a mouse indicating where the product name is located.

I'll wait till December for version 6.x.

There are no 64bit drivers for Microsoft mice and keyboards, as far as I
know.

Perhaps there is simply no 64bit driver for your particular mouse yet.
I don't remember whether there was a choice for a 64bit version of the
Microsoft software. But somehow, I kind of doubt it.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, since there is a bleak possibility that I
will be switching over to a 64bit machine sometime in the indefinite
future.

Re: microsoft intellimouse incompatability

64-bit drivers for many mice and keyboards were released months ago.
http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/mouseandkeyboard/Download.mspx Nothing
specific for Vista64, but both my mouse and keyboard work great on x64 and
Vista64. Mine are not wireless.
This notice is on the page
Microsoft Hardware Product Software will be available for Windows Vista in
December.

Re: microsoft intellimouse incompatability

Yes, and you can get Intellitype\point 5.5 x64 drivers\software to work on
Vista x64 using the same method described for the 32 bit version. I have
Desktop 6000 and full functionality of my keyboard and mouse.

RE: works fine in 5744

I have Intellipoint 5.5 working no prob. Intellitype 5.5 just will not fully
install. It gets part way then does the "Incompatibile" thing. Using Vista
x86 (32 bit) OS. Have tried the Neo... site. No help. Tried Don McD's method,
also no joy. I DO have the IntelliPoint going, but I said that already.

So, I guess it's wait til the 'real' drivers are out. Alas, but at least
there's some function, and the keyboard DOES work, just not the programmable
buttons. I use them to great advantage, so I'll be happy to have them back.
How about MS posting some betas on these??? Seems a little silly to have
beats on all these things but not on some functional items. (It seems that
there ARE betas, but no for public consumption). Please MS??? :(

Thanks for all. I DO like Vista (using building 5600 RC1) and Office 2007
BRT2. Looking forward to getting real, final issues. About the only thing I
see is the Media player 11 that is part of RC1 plays like it's a skipping
record. And I have GOOD braodband internet. Oh well, have a great evening and
new week...

RE: works fine in 5744

Hello Mills,
If you got 5744 from a legit source, you should be able to find an updated
(beta) copy of the new Intellipoint software in the same place, I think.
It does install all the way.
