Does Vista use a new version of NTFS?

I know WinXP uses NTFS 3.1, but does Vista use a newer, better version? If
so, what are the benefits of that versus WinXP NTFS 3.1?

Re: Does Vista use a new version of NTFS?

As far as I know it's still NTFS 3.1.
However running diskpart does show the ability to detect bitlocker...

Re: Yup Transactional NTFS Ck it out.

In order for me to use TxF on my current HD, do I need a full reformat with
the Final-Release Vista Boot-Disk to achieve this or is this something that
gets automatically implemented transparently on current WinXP-formatted
drives?

Re: Yup Transactional NTFS Ck it out.

Larry this is something that gets automatically implemented as part of
Vista--you need only install Vista. It's essentially their version of NTFS
in Vista.

An excellent set of high quality resources that frequently has new entries
on the Vista file system, numerous server issues and Vista issues, and Vista
Beta team chat reproductions is Jill Zoeller's blog. Jill has taken the
time to participate on this group, as has Darrel Gorter, two of the very few
people at MSFT Redmond Vista who do this.

See Jill Zoeller's Team Blog and her links to other blogs at
http://blogs.technet.com/filecab/default.aspx.

Take a look at the tags Jill has listed on the right of her web page. If
you're interested in some of those topics they provide a lot of valuable
information.

The answer is "Yes, it does."
By the way, the version of NTFS in XP is 5.1, not 3.1
If I'm not mistaken, the version of NTFS found in Vista RTM will be
"6.something-or-other".

Re: Does Vista use a new version of NTFS?

So all-in-all to get from WinXP's NTFS 5.x to Vista's NTFS 6.x - does this
require a full reformat? Or is 6.x simply the TxF we were posting earlier
that turns any WinXP NTFS 5.1 to Vista's NTFS 6.x automatically?

Re: Does Vista use a new version of NTFS?

Donald:

Use the built-in FSUTIL utility and you will find that indeed, the version
of NTFS in Windows XP/2003 is 3.1

E.g. at the Commadnd Prompt type:

fsutil fsinfo ntfsinfo c:

hit Enter

and look at the version number .. it's 3.1

It's called version 5.1 in the press after XP's NT version which is 5.1.
Windows Server 2003 uses the same version (that is: 3.1 / 5.1) of NTFS as XP
does.

Larry,

New Vista's file system features like TxF and symlinks are designed to
have minimal impact on on-disk structures. As others already pointed
out, Vista uses same version of NTFS as most recent previous versions of
Windows. You don't need to perform re-format or any other
data-destructive procedures to be able to use these new features.

For more information refer to following TechNet chat transcript:

I apologize in sack-cloth and ashes. fsutil does indeed return an NTFS
version of 3.1 for Windows XP w/SP2.

Since I currently do not have Vista installed, I don't know what would be
returned in Vista.

I guess I and others tend to confuse the file-system with the Operating
System.

Probably, Vista will be "Microsoft Windows 6.something", just as XP is
"Microsoft Windows 5.1.2600"

Of course, I could also be wrong about that.

Donald
