| Re: Can't download any software Hi, UAC prevents programs from installing without an acknowledgement from the user. It also prevents access to changing/altering system critical files without acknowledgement from the user. It doesn't prevent a user from downloading a file, but it will make them aware of the danger of running a file that was downloaded without knowing and trusting the source. -- Best of Luck, Rick Rogers, aka "Nutcase" - Microsoft MVP http://mvp.support.microsoft.com/ Windows help - www.rickrogers.org "rwolcott" <rwolcott1@stny.rr.com> wrote in message news:5E907075-0CBC-4D39-920C-368E0AF21BC9@microsoft.com... > I've had the same problem with no solution yet, but I think it has > something to do with the uac program > -- > Rich Wolcott > Dell XPS 400 > Pentium D 2.8G Dual Core > > > "Lon Carpenter" <lcarpenter@satx.rr.com> wrote in message > news:LezXg.46844$DU3.33522@tornado.texas.rr.com... >>I am unable to download anything from the internet. | Re: Can't download any software When you download and select save, you are prompted as to where to place the file. The default location is the user's documents folder. You should always make note of where you are downloading to or else how are you going to know where to go once its done?. -- Best of Luck, Rick Rogers, aka "Nutcase" - Microsoft MVP http://mvp.support.microsoft.com/ Windows help - www.rickrogers.org "Lon Carpenter" <lcarpenter@satx.rr.com> wrote in message news:LezXg.46844$DU3.33522@tornado.texas.rr.com... >I am unable to download anything from the internet. | Re: Can't download any software Rick - Yes, I know to be sure and remember the file I identified for saving the file. Unfortunately, everything appears normal during the download except when I finish, not only is the file not where it should be, it can't be found on "search" anywhere on the computer. | Re: Can't download any software Hi, "Search" relies heavily on the indexing, and if it's set to only index your user environment it will not locate anything stored outside of it. I would suggest you just type the path to the save location into the address bar of Windows Explorer or into the search line instead. -- Best of Luck, Rick Rogers, aka "Nutcase" - Microsoft MVP http://mvp.support.microsoft.com/ Windows help - www.rickrogers.org "Lon Carpenter" <lcarpenter@satx.rr.com> wrote in message news:8zEXg.46953$DU3.7297@tornado.texas.rr.com... > Rick - Yes, I know to be sure and remember the file I identified for > saving the file. | Re: Can't download any software I had this problem in Beta 2. This is in my opinion, a serious flaw with Vista. The way the file system works is very strange to me. Try switching your Vista drive to an XP machine and doing your search. You will find your files in a sub folder of your user name local files. But it seems to be different from the normal local files folder. You will never find the file searching your disk from Vista. It was possible for me to find the parent folder after knowing what to look for, but was denied access from within Vista using any level of credietials available to me. I COULD access the folder and subfolders using XP. When I originally downloaded the file it said it would be put into the My Documents folder. I first noticed something was wrong when trying to attach files using windows Live Mail Although the file I wanted to attach was right on my desktop, windows live mail couldn't find it. So when I had downloading problems I spent a little time poking about. Best as I can tell it's all some kind of smoke and mirrors virtualization re-direction scheme ("sandboxing", I think it's called). That gave me a very creeped out feeling, because with Vista, stuff can be on your hard drive but you would never know it even if you suspect it is there and activly look for it.. May be true on XP also for all I know, the more I think I know, the less I know, it would seem.
