Re: What's the best usb memory stick to augment RAM?

Hi,
my laptop has 512mb ram, and to run vista home premium 'properly' i need
1gig according to the windows vista requirements. I want to get the full
benefits of vista (like aero).
if i had a flash drive would it increase my ram to allow me to have 3d aero
etc.
i currently have a kingston data traveller 1 gb pen drive that i use for
college. i have also seen a "corsair turboFlash windows ready boost
accelerator". it comes in 512mb and 1gb, 1gb costs around £15. will these
work in the way that i want them to and is worth me buying them. thanks
www.corsair.com (search for turboflash)

ReadyBoost is not about adding more RAM to your system by USB it is
about improving data access as the USB memory is treated like an extra
fast pagefile.
So if you need more RAM then buy it, ReadyBoost is not your answer.

Re: What's the best usb memory stick to augment RAM?

Adding a USB flash drive will not allow Aero Glass to run on a machine that
couldn't run it otherwise. It may improve your performance by moving some
code from virtual memory on your hard disk to the faster memory of the flash
drive. The general consensus of early users is that it's difficult to notice
the difference on systems with >512mb. YMMV.

As to which flash drives will work with Readyboost, I wish the manufacturers
would start posting their capability to be used or not because at this time
it's very confusing and it seems a lot more don't work than do. Buyer
beware.

Re: What's the best usb memory stick to augment RAM?

As the others have said, you need to add memory to your laptop.
Minimum requirements posted by Microsoft and real world requirements
have always been different. In the real world, Vista needs1GB of memory,
2 GB or more for the best performance.

As far as ReadyBoost - MS has published minimum requirements.
Not all flash drives meet these requirements. I think now with Vista released
to the general public, you will start seeing Vista Ready flash drives.

In the meantime - check out this info. Scroll down to
"Rules for ReadyBoost Drives"

A USB drive does NOT supplement RAM. Think of it a a faster pagefile.

I know they are not supposed to be available until 3/07 but I got one
yesterday (2GB) in the MS "goody bag" at the Vista launch in NYC and it
works like a dream,

....where I read

"Running Windows Vista? Then you can use a SanDisk "Enhanced for
ReadyBoost" USB Flash Drive to improve your PC's performance -- without
the hassle and expense of installing additional RAM (Random Access
Memory) in your system."

and find the text a little misleading - in suggesting that via
ReadyBoost flash memory were a substitute for RAM:-(
