Re: Windows Mobile Device Center and Vista RC1

Dear Max,

I did indeed download the WMDC Beta 3. However, it doesn't seem to install.
I get a message "Network error reading from from C:\Users\.....\Temporary
Internet files\..." when trying to install directly from a "run from current
location" dialog box. If I download the drvupdate-x86.msi file, and then
attempt to install, installation seems to abort shortly after starting. This
behavior occurs whether UAC is on or off, whether my network connections are
enabled or disabled. I am logged on as administrator.

....any ideas...

Thanks very much!

Re: Windows Mobile Device Center and Vista RC1

What do you mean by "installation
seems to abort shortly after starting"?
With this 'update' there is not much to see--it rather silently installs
with no dialog boxes to "OK". When you actually connect your device (after
rebooting), Stuff Happens.

Re: Windows Mobile Device Center and Vista RC1

Dear Max,

Thanks for your help. the MSI installation is short, but perhaps it works.
"Windows Mobile Device Center Driver Update" does indeed appear in the
"Add-remove Programs" listing.

However, connecting a PocketPC spawns only the small window to synchronize
music, not the larger WMDC window with options to synchronize Outlook
Contacts or Calendar. Also, double-clicking on Windows Mobile Device Center
in either Control Panel or off the Start Menu does nothing - no window spawns
at all.

I may try the "WHOS" in a while if I can't figure out how to get the WMDB
Beta 3 to work.

Again, thanks for you help, if you have any ideas...

Re: Windows Mobile Device Center and Vista RC1

Hi All,
I am having the exact same problem except I'm using RC2. I even tried the
"WHOS" addition to the registry with no luck. I plug in my moto q and vista
says that it is installing and unrecognized driver. Any thoughts from
anyone? It worked for me in RC1. Very frustrating.

Re: Windows Mobile Device Center and Vista RC1

Dear Max,

This is the error message that written into the MSI....log:

Error 1316. A network error occurred while attempting to read from the file:
C:\Users\Johnson Lightfoote\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Tempora ry
Internet Files\Content.IE5\TSPJH2H9\drvupdate-x86.msi
=== Logging stopped: 10/18/2006 16:35:12 ===

It seems that drvupdate-x86.msi won't install even if the file is downloaded
and stored locally in a c:\temp subdirectory.

Thanks for your help!

Re: Windows Mobile Device Center and Vista RC1

In Control Panel/Programs and Features you should have two entries for
Windows Mobile Device Center--what do you show there--including the size(s)?

Re: Windows Mobile Device Center and Vista RC1

Dear Max,

Indeed, I have two green-dot icons. Windows Mobile Device Center is 7 Mb;
Windows Mobile Device Center Driver Update is 10 Mb.

When I right-click on Windows Mobile Device Center Driver Update to
"Repair," an installer sets to work, but in about five seconds I get a "Fatal
Error."

Also, double-clicking Windows Mobile Device Center is Control Panel produces
no response.

Thanks for your help!

Re: Windows Mobile Device Center and Vista RC1

You may have an Install issue.
Try this:
Make sure you have Administrator Privileges
From Programs and Features, choose to uninstall both (first the Update, then
the WMDC).
Reboot.
Make sure you are viewing all files (hidden, system, etc).
Go to ..\Windows\Windows Mobile in Explorer.
Run the Setup.exe that is there. Then run the wmupdate.msi if it is there.
Then run the beta3 update that you downloaded.
Reboot.
Plug in your (compatible?--running WM2003 or WM5) device, and try to open
WMDC from the shortcut in the Start Menu--see if it works.

Re: Windows Mobile Device Center and Vista RC1

Dear Max,

Thanks very much for your very clear instructions, which I followed to the
letter. However, I still only get the "small" window offering to sync media
and files, not the "large" green window offering to sync MS Outlook Contacts
and Calendar.

I'm using a Dell Axim x51v running Windows Mobile 5.1.70, which works fine
with another Windows XP computer. I have firewall, UAC, and Windows Defender
all turned off. I'm logged on with full Administrator rights.

Thanks for your help, anyway. I hope Microsoft is paying you for this. Maybe
I'll have to wait for the RTM version.

Any word on the suggested WMDC update in WIndows Update? Beta 3 did not fix
issue with i730 being recognized & connected.

Cheers!

Dear Max,

Also, I did a complete reinstall of Windows Vista RC1 from the DVD which
Microsoft sent out by U.S. mail, prior to trying your very good suggestions
below.

....still no luck...
