Mac OS makes it easy to invoke admin rights from a limited user account

Is there a way to do so smoothly and without broo-haha in vista?

The XP pro approach of hitting buffers > Log off > login as admin > make
the changes > logout or switch > back to limited user does seem a bit of
a chore.

Maybe making it a smooth or smoother transition is important?

Right click/run as admin is the usual way.

As Rick points out, it is easier than you make it out to be in XP in that
you can right click on the file and select Run As and choose the admin
account.

With Vista is added automatic prompts to elevate to admin level when it is
needed. When and if you get prompted can be controlled with group policy,
and whether you simply have to approve the elevation or provide admin
credentials is also configurable via group policy.
