I don't use the backup tool myself, I use Stomp PC Backup but I also, save any file I create or modify to more than one locations, I image regularly. File save and/or copying files to more than one location, preferably on more than one type of media but once you're caught up, it's not difficult to stay with it and it's essentially free just as the case for the Vista backup tool but with a true backup application, you can at least be sure you've gotten everything you need. I do methods wherein I individually select but I feel it's best to back that up with something that backs up the entire drive just in case I missed something. My point is, there are all kinds of options and some of them don't even require you to purchase 3rd party software. The question is what do you really want to do. I don't think much of the Vista tool but if the truth be known, it's primarily a glorified file zip application. There are plenty of free file zip apps out there that will allow you to do pretty much the same thing. Just Google free file zip. My only other suggestion, is not to rely on just one form and just one type of media...safety in redundancy!.:-) -- Michael Solomon Backup is a PC user's best friend DTS-L.Org: http://www.dts-l.org/ |

I think the current Vista backup tool creates an image which is different than a straight file zip app that essentially just compresses files. Nonetheless, you can use any of the free file zip applications as a possible backup solution. -- Michael Solomon Backup is a PC user's best friend DTS-L.Org: http://www.dts-l.org/ |

By that I mean, anything can fail and certainly if the place offering this option tells you so, take it seriously. This is the reason for redundancy, doing more than one type of backup on different media in order to avoid that type of issue. -- Michael Solomon Backup is a PC user's best friend DTS-L.Org: http://www.dts-l.org/ |

Some are not free. Here are two of the best third party solutions for the home user and I use them both: PC Backup formerly from Stomp, now owned by Migo: http://store.migosoftware.com/product.php?productid=16134&SourceId=&cat=0&page=1 Acronis True Image 10 Home Edition: http://tinyurl.com/37jnxe There are no magic bullets and your best defense against having a problem with a backup solution you are using is to backup to more than one location on different types of media. In that way, if a hard drive fails or some media you are using, DVD, CD or even flash fails, you have an alternative. -- Michael Solomon Backup is a PC user's best friend DTS-L.Org: http://www.dts-l.org/ |

| Re: Vista Ultimate Files Backup Failed As mentioned previously by myself and others, there are some major problems with Microsoft's "Backup" and file copying on both Vista and Windows Server 2008. Some of the problems appear to be hardware and driver specific coupled perhaps with the operating system improperly handling data transfer problems. The typical error condition is a hang or restart without any error messages and/or a sudden disconnection of the drive from which the data are being copied. I don't know what your hardware setup is, but we have had consistent, reproducible Backup and copy failures on one platform and none on a different platform. One of the backup devices that we use is Apricorn's "Ez Bus DTS". This is a SATA II external storage device that connects to a personal computer either by eSATA or by USB 2.0. Interestingly, all of the errors have involved SATA II to SATA II transfers either between internal drives or from internal drives to the Ez Bus DTS. We have not had a single failure backing up or copying to and from internal SATA II drives and an external USB 2.0 connected SATA II drive. One other condition that you may encounter is failure to copy a directory that contains one or more protected (DRM) audiovisual files. The copy can fail with or without an error message. This particular problem doesn't apply to "Backup". |
