| Funniest quote of the day...so far From the Extreme Tech web site: "Unlike previous Microsoft operating systems, Windows Vista is pretty streamlined right out of the box." Oh really? I didn't know a OS that hogs on average 8 GB of your hard drive and clutters it up with tens of thousands of files, many that just sit doing nothing, waiting for some special use 99% of users never need is what's known as streamlined. I learn something new every day. |

You skipped over the first part of the sentence: "Unlike previous Microsoft operating systems" Vista can be as non streamlined as you wish it to be. That does not matter. They were comparing it to PREVIOUS OSs. If your argument is that XP is more streamlined then state as such. But your little rant only proves how irrational you can be. As for the "files never used" comment, Linux and OSX do the same thing as well as XP. So I guess you'll never be happy. |

| Re: Funniest quote of the day...so far ****, glad you're not a gamer. With games coming on multiple DVD's these days, even console games can be ~5GB. That's for a single game. OS'es get bigger, they add more to it. More functionality. You want me to give you Linux with 8 GB? Done. Red Hat with equal amount of accessories of Windows. -- Dustin Harper dharper@vistarip.com http://www.vistarip.com -- > Adam Albright wrote: >> From the Extreme Tech web site: >> >> "Unlike previous Microsoft operating systems, Windows Vista is pretty >> streamlined right out of the box." >> >> Oh really? Dictionary.com gives this.... 1. Having a contour designed to offer the least possible resistance to a current of air, water, etc.; optimally shaped for motion or conductivity. 2. Designed or organized to give maximum efficiency; compact. 3. Modernized; up-to-date. Looks like #3 is the only one that may fit here..... Vista certainly does not match #1 or #2 on what would be considered a standard PC...(non-dual CPU/core). While I've got no dual CPU/core experience with Vista, from what I've read, dual CPU/core performance is supposed to be better due to the way Vista handle it. So, in a sense, Vista is more streamlined than any previous Windows OS running on a new dual CPU/Core system. But as far as unnecessary default setup, I would not say it is more streamlined, just the same. For every XP I've installed, there are always 10 or more services I turn off immediately. Services using CPU cycles that are not needed....like WirelessZeroConfig on a wired desktop for one. UAC initially does nothing to make your PC more time efficient. Moving well known locations of system items/setting's does nothing for streamlining. Sure, after you'v used it for a while you start to know where eveything has moved to, but certainly NOT 'out of the box', as the article states. Back to the dual CPU/core thing, it would be interesting to see some test results to try to prove this, Vista vs XP on identical hardware, several setup's..... -Single-core vs. dual core -Single core vs. Dual CPU. -Pentium D dual core vs. Pentium Core Duo -and probably 6 or 8 other permutations at least, including AMD-based PCs. The Pent D/Vista vs. Core Duo/Vista is really the most interesting one here. In all of the dual-core hype I've seen, I'm not sure if they've ever differentiated between PentD or Core-Duo as running faster...only dual core. The new internal architecture of the CoreDuo processors is supposed to give you faster processing at slower clock speeds than the Pentium D, so possibly Vista is faster than XP on a CoreDuo than an equivalent PentD only. The DVD sailed through the air to my garbage can with very little air resistance. 8^) Actually, I didn't throw it away but I uninstalled it until the makers of my printers, etc. support it fully. When you have a few spare minutes snoop around in the Windows folders and check the properties on some of the dll files for example. You'll discover Vista "installed" all kinds of files, some that are only required if you run foreign language versions of some things, which for most people... just waste drive space and just make Vista more bloated then it needs to be. |

At the work place I have Vista running on 5 machines and all of them are older hyper threaded machines. The users of those machines are more organized and able to find information much quicker then before. So aside from the word "compact", #2 fits. Because of that fact you wont see Office 2007 on my machines anytime soon. That would freak everyone out. I use it myself but I wont force it on anyone else. Unless they ask for it. |

Who needs a printer these days? :) I finally convinced a buddy of mine to give Vista a try. While he loved it there was one thing that just wouldn't work for him. I believe his CPU was an Athlon XP 2400 (?) and when he tried to run any form of H.264 the mfpmp.exe process would tax his system from 50-100% CPU usage. We tried a couple other video players and nothing else would work. YET! The videos played fine while using Media Center. So, the age old remark was mumbled once again, "f@$k windows media player, stupid POS". He'll upgrade again when a decent video player is released. Is there any yet? Bsplayer didn't work and I forget the other one we tried. |

My system folders add up to 7.8GB and I've installed a good chunk of apps. So I don't see how Vista is 8GB by itself. |
