Vista internet connection INSANITY - help!!

PLEASE HELP!!
My husband (a Mac user) recently purchased this HP Pavilliondv6000 notebook for me, fully loaded with the new Vista system. We are both hooked up to our Lynksys wireless unit. My computer can browse the internet for awhile and then suddenly I can no longer view any web pages despite the fact that the computer still shows I am connected to our network and internet. The only way I am able to regain access to the web is by RESTARTING my computer. I seem to be able to browse for shorter and shorter periods, but still no apparent rhyme or reason. He NEVER has any connection issues on his end. I have spent hours upon hours with my ISP, Lynksys and HP customer services to no avail. I've adjusted as many security, connection, network, firewall, program, etc settings that I dare to pretend to understand and still nothing works. I am truly out of patience and ideas. I hope someone has a fix for this before I run it over with my car or hit the salesman that sold it to my husband over the head with it!
Thanks!

Re: Vista internet connection INSANITY - help!!

jtagrl,

If your Lynksys wireless unit is over 10 months old, I would try a new
model. Make certain it hasn't been on the shelf for a long period. Our
Computer Club house call folks (I'm one of them) have replaced three over
the past month. All solved the connection problems. When you buy it, make
sure that you will be able to return it in the case that doesn't solve the
problem.

Re: Vista internet connection INSANITY - help!!

Do you guys know how to give static IP's to the machines?

If so, disable DHCP on the router and give static IPs to the machines,
.. See this screenshot

http://img187.imageshack.us/img187/2659/screenie1sj6.png

as you can see the gateway and the dns server are the ip of my router....

I dont believe your router needs replacement as the other poster claimed.

Re: Vista internet connection INSANITY - help!!

Some routers are not compatible with Vista.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/932134/en-us

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928233

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/using/tools/igd/default.mspx

In your case I think the first link applies. As someone else suggested one
workaround that sometimes works is to use a static IP address for the Vista
computer. Another thing that may help is to turn off uPnP on the router.
This forces Vista not to use this feature. You may need to upgrade your
router to take full advantage of the enhanced networking features in Vista.

Re: Vista internet connection INSANITY - help!!

Our router is less than 10 months old and poses no problems for our other computer.

Following the links you provided, I agree that the first article best describes my situation. However, I was unable to download the compatibility tool to explore further. The "continue" button following the terms agreement is inactive.

Re: Vista internet connection INSANITY - help!!

I know where to go to enter the IP address, but do not know if I am to type in my computer's address or do I find one elsewhere to use? Upon typing in an address, do the points below fill in automatically or do I need more info and knowledge than just an IP address?
Sorry, I'm no IT expert so, forgive my ignorance!

Re: Vista internet connection INSANITY - help!!

When the connection drops, if you are using Internet Explorer and Windows is
managing the Wireless card, you should have the option of letting Windows
diagnose your network connection problems and suggest solutions. Does this
actually happen, and what is your experience?

Has anyone you talked with suggested disabling Internet Protocol Version 6
on the connection, and did you do it? That's the one Vista-specific thing I
can think of, which, conceivably, could cause trouble.

Concurring with other postings, I would check for updated drivers for your
computer's network card. This can often be as simple as running Windows
Update and looking at the offered hardware driver updates.

Re: Vista internet connection INSANITY - help!!

My wife and I are experiencing the SAME behavior between our brandnew Gateway
and DLink wireless router working with other wireless devices in the
house......

We are - and have always - using hard coded IPs. We have also disabled IPv6.

Connection dropping continues....

ps - Can anyone explain how an 802.11 comm standard is or is not Vista (pc
os) compatible?!?!??
