I installed this security update that was coded as an important update on
Windows Update. After rebooting, the system went to a blue screen (error in
win32k.sys). It would not even boot in safe mode, so I had to boot from the
Vista CD, run a system restore and everything worked fine. Then, a few
hours later, Windows Update automatically installed the update again and on
reboot, again the same blue screen error. I had to run system restore a
second time to fix it.

Has anyone else had this problem? Is there any solution other than turning
off automatic update right now? How can MS screw up so bad on an update
that it forces to people's systems by default?

Which is why it's a good idea to wait on updates for a few days after
they're out to see what happens to users who went for them as soon as
they're posted or foolishly have AU set to download and install without
user input enabled.

got installed on your system that so many others do not? You may want to
start by listing your hardware and installed software. Something on "your"
system is causing an interaction.

Though I've seen posts about this on the newsgroup, my update went through
just fine.

I have the following and have no symptoms of your problem:

Office 2007 Professional (custom full install)
PerfectDisk 8 build 58
Firefox 2.0.0.3 (no add-ons at all)
Logitech Setpoint Software ver 330a (using mouse only)

I would start with Nero. Do you have the absolute latest version installed?

Go from there with the others, again using the latest version for Vista. If
it isn't listed as being Vista compatible I would dump it.

What I would do is after it installs update, sys restore so then go to
windows update and go to change settings. click download but choose to
install so next it downloads, hide the update.

I do have the latest Nero version; just updated it this weekend. Since Nero
is probably the most popular CD burning software, if Nero had compatibility
issues I'd think there would be way more problems reported.

I did read that there was a compatibility issue with Realtek audio and this
patch (which my integrated audio is) but it was giving different symptoms.
MS did release a hot patch for that; but that hot patch won't install on my
system; it gives an error; probably because I need to install the security
update first; which I can't do because I can't boot into Windows after
installing it.

what I would suggest is to change the update to NOTIFY you when they are available.
when you see one is available STOP the Virus program and any extra firewall, download and install the update, after the reboot, turn everything back on.

I also have experienced this problem - last night right after the update. It
downloaded & installed then restarted. I can get as far as the Welcome
screen & no farther. I currently am at work, so I don't have my PC's info,
but it's only 2 weeks old, Gateway DX430s, and other than Office 2007 &
Firefox, nothing I have loaded on my pc is what JH has.
