| Re: Windows Media Player: Won't quit If you could use the Windows Debugging Toolkit: http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/devtools/debugging/default.mspx and capture a DMP file of the player in this state, I'd really appreciate a chance to look at that. | Re: Windows Media Player: Won't quit Hi Zach, I presume I can just create a DMP from the windows task manager by right clicking on the wmplayer.exe process and choosing Create Dump File. I have done this, but the file size is about 365Megs. Where can I upload this to? Thanks, Jonathan |

| Re: Windows Media Player: Won't quit You probably want to ZIP or RAR that up first, but anyplace like yousendit or megaupload or that kind of temporary file transfer site would be great. =) -- Speaking for myself only. | Re: Windows Media Player: Won't quit Hi Zach, Please find the upload at http://www.megaupload.com/?d=ZNJDO60B I hope I have done this correctly. Of course I have zipped it and it did shrink down to something much more reasonable. Regards, Jonathan |

| RE: Windows Media Player: Won't quit I have this problem as well -- but ONLY on SP1. I am using Vista Home Premium 32-bit. I have narrowed the problem down somewhat. First, I have to open WMP by double-clicking on a media file (e.g., mp3). If I open WMP through the start menu, the failure won't happen. Then, I have to hibernate the system without closing WMP. After resuming, when I try to exit WMP, the process won't end. Then when I try to open WMP again (through Start menu or double-clicking) the window won't open. |

| Re: Windows Media Player: Won't quit That particularly indicates that one of your system drivers isn't unhibernating well. It would probably be a great idea to identify the video card and audio card for your system. What are those? Do the vendors have driver updates available for those? -- Speaking for myself only. | Re: Windows Media Player: Won't quit The video is "nVidia NVS 140M". The latest driver version on Lenovo's site is 6.15.11.0145. I have also found two other driver versions: 6.15.11.7482 and 6.15.11.7570. All three of these driver versions behave the same way (wmplayer does not close with SP1). The audio is "SoundMax Integrated Digital HD Audio". The latest driver version is 6.10.1.5510. I have also tried removing the driver from ADI (uninstall SoundMax) and using the MS provided base driver (6.0.6000.16386), as well as disabling the audio device. In all three cases the error still happens. Do you think it is odd that this behavior only happens if WMP is opened by double-clicking a media file? If I use the start menu and then open the media file, the problem doesn't happen! Thanks for the help. | Re: Windows Media Player: Won't quit I had made another post on this same topic, but have now further information. The culprit is Windows Media Center. It holds WMP in a suspended mode so that files are available to Media Center extenders. If you do not use Media Center, you can turn off the "Feature???" by going into Control Panel, selecting the option for "Default Programs", then selecting "Set Program Access and Computer Defaults". Under the "Custom" Dropdown, look for the "Choose a default Media Player" section. Next to the entry for Windows Media Center, uncheck the box for "Allow Access to this program". Reboot the computer for these changes to take affect, as it is possible and probable that Media Center is already running in the backround. You will also notice after these changes that the Media Center program disappears from your Start - All Programs Menu. -- xandypx ------------------------------------------------------------------------ xandypx's Profile: http://forums.techarena.in/member.php?u=53103 View this thread: http://forums.techarena.in/showthread.php?t=717386 http://forums.techarena.in |

| Re: Windows Media Player: Won't quit I use a Dell XPS M1330 and developed the problem after a while. After reading the thread and disabling the Media Centre my problem was not solved but with the concept that another application kept it running I was eventually able to trace it to a driver/software i installed called "Dell Premium Remote Control" which kept Windows Media Player running in the background (and if media player process was killed in task manager it would relaunch it). It also prevented the mini player from showing on the task bar when launching a file by double-clicking on an mp3 (etc) which would play but would not show in the task bar until I would manually relaunch the player while the song was playing from the speakers. Bottom line, if any of the above methods don't work for you try to locate a process or processes by way of elimination that may be relaunching the player in the background. -- Delinka ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Delinka's Profile: http://forums.techarena.in/members/delinka.htm View this thread: http://forums.techarena.in/vista-help/717386.htm http://forums.techarena.in |

| Re: Windows Media Player: Won't quit Hi, I think I may have found a possible solution. I had exactly the same problem that only started when I enabled the mediaplayer toolbar. Basically play music, and when I closed it, the music would still play and the wmplayer process would still be loaded. I have literally this minute unchecked the media player toolbar option, thankfully now when I close the app, it stops the music, and the wmplayer process. Downside of course is now when I minimise mediaplayer it stays on the taskbar, and does not go into the neat little toolbar......I can live with that. Would be interested to see if this fixes your problems? Andy btw, running Vista Ultimate 32, with SP1. -- andyc1864 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ andyc1864's Profile: http://forums.techarena.in/members/andyc1864.htm View this thread: http://forums.techarena.in/vista-help/717386.htm http://forums.techarena.in |
