| Just a little tip for taskmanager In vista like in Win2k and unlike XP, when you press alt-ctrl-del then you get options, and only one of them is the task manager. The correct key-combo would be now (for vista but works for win2k and xp as well) ctrl-shift-esc to get the taskmanager up. Of course you can also right click on the taskbar and select taskmanager too. |

| Re: Just a little tip for taskmanager Great tip. Thanks! I like the little shortcut keys, and am making a nice little list of them. They really speed things up. -- Dustin Harper dharper@vistarip.com http://www.vistarip.com | Vista Resource & Information Page kirk jim wrote: > In vista like in Win2k and unlike XP, when you press alt-ctrl-del > then you get options, and only one of them is the task manager. > > The correct key-combo would be now (for vista but works for win2k and xp as > well) ctrl-shift-esc to get the taskmanager up. > > Of course you can also right click on the taskbar and select > taskmanager too. > > > > |

| Re: Just a little tip for taskmanager Unlike XP? What the heck are you talking about? Both key combos give me the exact same windows in both W2K and XP as well as Vista. Correct key-combo? Ctrl + Alt + Del brings up a window with six options, LOCK COMPUTER, LOG OFF, SHUT DOWN, CHANGE PASSWORD, TASK MANAGER and CANCEL. |

| Re: Just a little tip for taskmanager This is from my XP keyboard guide, which is attached. I submit that the below facts may guide us to a hypothsis on Windows Vista's behaviour and that of previous versions. Key Description Ctrl + Alt + Delete Starts the Close Program dialog box (Windows 9x), Security dialog (NT, 2000, XP if Welcome Screen disabled), and Task Manager (XP with Welcome Screen enabled) Ctrl + Alt + Shift + Delete Quickly reboots NT4SP4 and later systems. Does not appear to work on XP. Note: A registry key needs to be set to enable this key sequence. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\ Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon EnableQuickReboot=1 as a RegSZ (a string). Ctrl + Alt + Delete twice on the Welcome Screen Presents the non Welcome Screen logon. This works on XP Pro only Ctrl + Shift + Esc Starts the Close Program dialog box (Windows 9x) or Task Manager (NT, 2000, XP) Ctrl + Alt + Shift and Close or Cancel in the Shutdown dialog Closes down Window's shell in a normal shutdown without logging off.. Use Task Manager's File - New Task (Run) ... dialog to start Explorer to restart the shell. I was wondering what your response was going to be and it came out to be very interesting. You claim this setting was changed based on my using a single machine when this is domain behavior? Try again. Your blanket statements are what get you into the most trouble. |

| Re: Just a little tip for taskmanager When XP is on a domain, CTRL+ALT+DEL will bring up the six option screen. When it is not on a domain, it will bring up the Task Manager. The best key combination is CTRL+SHIFT+ESC, which brings up Task Manager regardless of the domain association. Its also nice because it doesn't clear the screen first. Task manager rungs at a higher priority than other programs and utilities. Therefore, it will typically respond when other programs will not. CTRL+ALT+DEL and CTRL+SHIFT+ESC sequences are System Request Attention type functions which also have a high priority since they have a more direct connection to the hardware. Using CTRL+SHIFT+ESC does not clear the screen before Task Manager appears. So if you are trying to troubleshoot something on the screen that is not responding, use this. Otherwise you may not be able to see the 'hung' application screen when Task Manager appears.
