| Re: Vista & Dell Computers - Just a wee bit to get it off my chest! It is my computer. I paid for it and I can do whatever I want to do with it. Windows is too limiting. I want more out of my Operating System. However, there are times, when I want or need to use Windows, but those times do not happen very often, so why should I tie up my computer resources for those few times that I WANT to use Windows. In Linux, I can run Windows as a virtual machine, for those few times that I WANT to use it and I can shut the blasted thing off for all those other times. Linux gives me security, lots of computing power, multiple desktops, better sound and video quality. Even with the Windows virtual machine running, I notice no degradation in my computing experience. It is just one window out of the 10 or 20 that I run at the same time. I can be burning a cd or dvd, downloading files, chatting, running the Windows virtual machine (which is also running programs), browsing the net, watching you tube videos and I am still going strong. Nothing crashes. Please Note: I WANT NOT WHAT MICROSOFT WANTS... I LIKE the look and feel of XP and Vista as its a uniformed standard.... Linux is not and that is its main downfall. The average user must be guided by a standard and whether you like that or not... Windows has that. |

There is nothing better than Kate linked to GCC for a mean, lean programmers environment, (in another users group I would get slaughtered by the VI/emacs crowd for such a satement). It is not, however, for the average user. Kind Regards, Wayne McDermott |

"The only "help" *anyone* on this group needs is to learn to show some wisdom, patience and prudence and wait on Vista until it's ready for prime time. Do you think that my OEM Nero 6 would be any more compatible if I were to wait for Vista primetime? Other than waiting for nVidia to get their act together and produce a full driver version, my system would work no better in six months than it does now.. | Re: Vista & Dell Computers - Just a wee bit to get it off my chest! Perhaps you would like to tell us why you are using an OS which does not appear to cater for all of your hardware.. you seem to be quick enough off of the mark to tell those who have Vista hardware driver issues to go back to XP or move over to Linux (Ubuntu specifically).. You made a remark about a winmodem of yours not running in Ubuntu, and somebody gave you information about how to get it to work.. is that not what we are doing here? I wouldn't dream of going into the Ubuntu forum and telling somebody to change to Vista or XP just because they couldn't find a driver for a modem immediately, but you seem to have no problem doing the reverse.. So have you Googled for the modem driver yet? http://linmodems.org/ http://tldp.org/HOWTO/Modem-HOWTO-2.html Interestingly, there is a short statement re lack of Linux drivers for some modems in the second link.. now where have we heard 'There are no drivers available presently" before? Maybe the answer is to change the modem.. OMG, the humanity.. how could Linux do this to us.. oh no.. they give us a free OS and then expect us to pay $5 for a modem that works!!!!!!!!!!!!
