In short, you tried to set up Ubuntu thinking it was Windows when it isn't. You can also install programs using the Applications/Add Remove feature that comes with Ubuntu. Alias |

| Re: Vista & Dell Computers - Just a wee bit to get it off my chest! Well for the fun of it, I just tried to install Java on my ubuntu install. - Start Synaptic - Search for JRE (or java would have worked too) - Click on the 4 Java packages needed for java - Click install... - Go take a piss...too much soda... - Come back...accept EULA... - Done, verify successful via the verification tool on java.com Yes...mindblowingly difficult. -- Stephan 2003 Yamaha R6 君のこと思い出す日なんてないのは 君のこと忘れたときがないから |

I even removed the Java JRE again because I don't need that either. =) -- Stephan 2003 Yamaha R6 君のこと思い出す日なんてないのは 君のこと忘れたときがないから |

| Re: Vista & Dell Computers - Just a wee bit to get it off my chest I'm only speaking for myself, but when I decided to buy a new system with Vista installed, I was resigned to paying a minimum of a grand for a good machine. After researching the local stores and online, I decided that Dell was at least upfront about the pricing of both components and add-ons, and their customer service seems better to me. I originally used the build-up feature on their website and printed out an estimate for a C521. I decided to call my order in instead, and it turned out that the original estimate didn't include a dual-core processor. The operator was able to upgrade that for about $100, and I got 10% off my computer price, paying about $1200. So far, my system has run well, and I do like the security features incorporated in Vista. BTW, the constant arguing between anti- and pro-Vista crowds keeps drawing me back to this discussion room. -- Chelydturn "Richard Urban" wrote: > I have a friend who wanted to get a new laptop in October. Consoles have always existed to compete with the PC. What used to kill the consoles, was the availability of free games for the PC. What's currently hurting the PC is that the cost of "recommended" graphic cards approaches that of consoles. The logic often goes like this... Do I want the kids to have unspervised Internet access? Yes, they're old enough to be sensible and it's a boon for their schoolwork -> put a PC in their bedroom No, they're too young to face all the strange stuff out there -> put a console system in their bedroom As MS can win either way (thanks to the X-box product), there's less impetus to push the PC ahead in the gaming space. I'm hoping Vista's Aero fluff will drive Intel and other budget video chipset makers to up the ante, so that off-the-peg PCs will be able to run commercial games and downloaded demos, etc. As it is, games are often peddled by dumb retail as "poison candy"; folks buy a game, it needs more hardware, the shop won't take it back, so they end up buying a new PC from the same shop. Hence the nickname: Inedible Confection (for our local dumb retailler, who are really called Incredible Connection) >--------------- ---- --- -- - - - - Saws are too hard to use. What's currently hurting the PC is that the cost of > "recommended" graphic cards approaches that of consoles. I don't think that is exclusively it though. Sure, the price for the hardware may be a barrier to some. On the other hand, it is the high-level of graphics, requiring said hardware, that on the flip side makes it difficult to compete. If I made a game today that had only half the graphics requirements it is unlikely I'd ever get it onto any shelf. Sure I could attempt to sell it online, but that'd never reach the same audience as a store can. This is as far as the US is concerned that is. Walk into an EB Games (at least to my latest experience) in the US and you see a small shelf in the darkest corner of the room with some PC games. Walk into a major, not even game-focused, electronics store here in germany and you get a huge shelf filled with nothing but PC Games. I know one store in my area has almost a 3rd of the length of the building dedicated to PC games (store about the size of a best buy). Titles that never existed, nor will exist, in the US...usually made by small independant local companies. Not up to par necessarily with the latest DX10 features graphics-wise....but with potentially excellent gameplay in return. I think the largest problem I see with the PC Gaming market, especially in the US, that Eye Candy is valued greater than gameplay. People appear to be happy to shell out 50 bucks over and over again for yet another sequel to some game for just a couple new eye candy features (hmm...reminds me of a certain operating system). Gameplay actually appears to come second place... I wish I personally was a little bit more graphically inclined to where I could do my own artwork and I would actaully make some games myself and see what happens. Ironically, I can create the most complex 3D CAD models for engineering purposes all day long...but when it comes to making content for a game, which I suppose requires far more artistic creativity...my mind goes blank. -- Stephan 2003 Yamaha R6 君のこと思い出す日なんてないのは 君のこと忘れたときがないから |
