How do they advertise > themselves? Usually in the yellow pages, word of mouth, and Newspaper ads. > > What kind of price can you expect from them compared to the big companies? Pretty close to what you get from the big box sellers, usually a tad more. One thing you have to realize is the big box sellers buy components by the truckload whereas I purchase by the case. So as a result they get a much better price break. The other thing to consider is a good local builder will use quality components which will cost more than the barely spec stuff that the large builders use. For instance all of my machines use true 350 watt power supplies for small form factor systems and true 450 + watt power supplies for full sized systems. Another thing a good local builder will do is take the time to assemble and test each system, and usually take a few extra steps to ensure that the system is as reliable and clean as possible. My suggestion in finding a good local builder is to ask around and look at ads. For the most part stay away from the person that is working out of their homes, unless you know them and know they will be around. Purchase from those that have invested in a store, they will be more likely to be around for the term of your warranty. > > Do they "build" laptops as well as desktops? They can to a point. Intel has spurred a common components program for laptops, so they can be manufactured by local builders. But my confidence in the quality of these components is lacking, and until I see otherwise I will just resell quality laptops instead. I sell the Lenovo 3000 line and the Thinkpad lines of notebooks. I havn't found anything that is built as well as these laptops from any other manufacturer, unless you are talking specialty laptops. They always work, and they never come back. What I offer to the customer if they buy from me is 2 years of antivirus support, I back up the manufacturers warranty by doing everything possible in-house, but if it needs to be shipped in for repair I also foot the shipping. I also do the full initial setup of the product and make the product backup DVD's or CD's. What it all boils down too is you pay more for a local build but a local builder will give you more bang for your buck, and you can rest well that you have good support for the product you purchased. > > I'm ready for this.
