| Re: Vista's Weird Folder View Problem That script is for folders that take on the wrong template (documents, music, pics, etc) and don't have a 'Customize' tab in their Properties dialog (Programs, Computer, System Drive), which allows the user to restore the 'All Items' template. You sound more like a victim of content-sniffing on folders that you can customize. Try explicitly setting the folders to be 'All Items' and see if that doesn't help stabilize your views. -- Good Luck, Keith Microsoft MVP [Windows XP Shell/User] "folderguy" <comic_book_auctions******.com> wrote in message news:folderguy.2pb8az@no-mx.tabletquestions.com... > > can anyone confirm if the script above fixes the problem? > > I'll set my folders to view as Large Icons, and then Vista, when it > wants to, resets it to Details view. > > I'll also arrange folders customly, and then sometimes vista rearranges > them by Name. > > Will the script fix these problems? | Re: strange occurence, not sure if vista-related If the computer were to shut down as you suggest, the monitor would be powered off as a function of the normal shutdown. There was likely a power failure, no matter how brief, that caused this to happen. -- Regards, Richard Urban Microsoft MVP Windows Shell/User (For email, remove the obvious from my address) Quote from George Ankner: If you knew as much as you think you know, You would realize that you don't know what you thought you knew! Unless we're talking about a laptop, most monitors I'm aware of have to be turned off separately. Either that, or they go into some kind of low-power mode, with the power light blinking or perhaps still burning solid but in a different color to indicate it's in low-power mode. I realize there are hundred of monitors out there and that I've only used a handful in my lifetime, so maybe there are monitors that go off automatically when the computer shuts down. I haven't seen one, though. |

| Re: Vista's Weird Folder View Problem Content-sniffing is when Explorer 'guesses' what template to use based on the folder contents. If there are picture files, it uses the Picture & Video template; music files, Music Icons or Music Details, etc. Are you having problems will all folders or just certain ones? -- Good Luck, Keith Microsoft MVP [Windows XP Shell/User] "folderguy" <comic_book_auctions******.com> wrote in message news:folderguy.2pcmaz@no-mx.tabletquestions.com... > > what is content sniffing? i've tried everything...including the all > types method and it still does not remember the correct info for > specific folders. > > > -- > folderguy |

| Re: Vista's Weird Folder View Problem it happens with random folders.. they simply forget my settings sometimes, or revert back to Details mode, and sometimes it groups the folder by name, even though I never specified to do that. makes no sense. |

Keith suggested a registry edit to effectively disable the content sniffing for all folders. That does seem to have worked, but some folder views were still changing. I later noticed that a particular pair of folders (Computer and C:\Users\Mark\Documents\Uni\Year4) seem to always have the same view. If I change the view of one, the other also changes next time I open it! It's as if both folders are mapped to the same subkey of "HKCU\....\Bags" - maybe some kind of broken hashing (not knowing how folders are mapped to the Bags keys...) I've not yet found any other folders paired in this way, but I have most of my folders set to the same view anyway so probably wouldn't notice. Maybe some of these apparently random changes aren't quite as random as they seem. Doesn't make them any less annoying though, but at least consistent problems are usually easier to track down and fix ;o) |

| Re: Vista's Weird Folder View Problem I've written a script that will fix a folder that doesn't allow customization. Right-click on the link below and select 'Save Target As...' and save the zip to your computer. Then unzip & run the script.
