Windows Update Error

I got Vista Home Premium as a free upgrade for XP MCE. It came
yesterday, and I went to install. Disaster--some problem with 'asms'
that could only be overcome by installing vLite and installing Vista
that way. I did a clean install of XP first, then Vista over that, as a
clean install. Even during the install, Vista was unable to get the
latest updates. When I went directly after the install to get updates, I
click WINDOWS UPDATE and immediately get "Windows Explorer Stopped
Working" error and explorer restarts. If I go to Update via the web,
same thing. Here's the log--same report every time I try it.

Re: Windows Update Error

Hi Fatawan, :D

It seems from the error with "GetUserTokenFromSessionId" that there is
a permissions problem.

So try the following:

If the Background Intelligent Transfer Service is not setup correctly
you may get this type of error so...

Go to start/run/services.msc

Double-click Background Intelligent Transfer Service.

Click Start.

If it starts then this isn't the problem.

If it doesn't start click on the Log On tab.

Ensure that the "Local System Account" radio button is selected.

Try starting it again. If it succeeds this time, stop it and try
windows update again.

when you attempt to use the Windows Update site'

Good Luck and tell us how you get on,
regards
Steve

Re: Windows Update Error

An "asms" error usually means the Setup program cannot communicate with the
CD/DVD-ROM drive (scratched disc?). Would your vendor allow an exchange?

You could try typing sfc /scannow into the Run box to check to see if there
are any corrupt system files.

Also, open C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\ReportingEvents.log and look for
an error code number after "Failure Software Synchronization", such as
"error 0x80072ee2", starting at the bottom of the log (i.e., the last error
code number).

Re: Windows Update Error

Steve:

BITS was started, and the Local System Account button checked. I
stopped and tried WU, and restarted and tried again, and got the same
error both ways. All my administrator ducks are in a row according to
that article.

Dean-dean:

sfc /scannow showed nothing

Oddly, in that log you sent me to, it appears that Windows Update is
working just fine  I see no errors. I won't copy all the
junk, but for example(in reverse order):

That is the entire content of that log, minues all the numbers/letters
strings. I just this moment tried Windows Update, and I get the
original Windows Explorer Stopped issue.

Microsoft suggests a memory issue. I'll run the diagnostic, but this
machine has been playing games, media center, etc in XP just perfectly.
It's not overclocked or anything, and has high quality memory.

Any more clues in there?

Re: Windows Update Error

Whoa! Memtest is throwing a jillion errors. I am off to clear my CMOS
and get my BIOS back to defaults. Perhaps this will lead to a solution,
or perhaps a red herring.

Is it common to have to change BIOS settings after upgrading to
Vista???

Fatawan,

What motherboard and RAM are you using?

Is this a new PC or did you upgrade from XP?

Re: Windows Update Error

It's a DFI Infinity 975G/X with Crucial Ballistix DDR2 1000(PC2 8000).
The PC is only a few months old, and I upgraded from XP. Vista would not
even think of installing in my rig, so I formatted the drive,
reinstalled XP, and then installed Vista over that as a clean
install(not upgrade).

So, my CMOS clear worked, and I have just one stick of RAM in there now
doing MEM Test. So far, so good after a couple passes. Once that gets by
with 0 errors, I will throw the other stick in. If that combo passes
Memtest, off we go to see if updates work.

Re: Windows Update Error

You can also run Memtest from the Vista DVD. If you can, try removing
sticks to a minimum, then test each one to find out if one reports
differently than the other. E.g., if you added ram after you bought the
computer, remove the new ram and see how the original tests out, etc.

Ordinarily, no change to the BIOS is necessary, especially since it sounds
like your computer is relatively new.

Video card is a EVGA 7950 GT KO

One stick of RAM is bad. I got things running smoothly with the good
stick. However, windows update still stops windows explorer. Any more
info on that front?

Re: Windows Update Error

Ok lets try resetting the Windows Update Data Store and the try updating
your Vista from scratch just in case the Data Store is corrupt....

1. Open an elevated command prompt. (Go to Start -> Programs ->
Accessories, right-click on Command Prompt, and choose "Run as
administrator".)

2.In the command prompt window, run the following two commands:
(a) net stop wuauserv
(b) rmdir /s C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore

3. Run Regedit. (Go to Start -> Run, type "regedit" and press Enter.)

4. In Regedit goto
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate.
Right-click on WindowsUpdate in the tree and choose Delete.

5. In the command prompt window, run this command:
net start wuauserv

6. Close the command prompt and Regedit.

7. Now try the Windows Update. Because it is reset it will take longer
than usual to come up with the updates.

See how it goes.

Re: Windows Update Error

Steve:

I certainly appreciate your efforts in my continuing saga!

I did as you directed. That part went fine. However, when I clicked
Windows Update, whammo, I get that Windows Explorer Has Stopped error
immediately. You mentioned that it would take longer than usual to come
up--this error happens instantaneously when I click WU, whether in the
toolbar, control panel, or even going to the microsoft site.

On the plus side, my memory errors have ceased, and Vista Media Center
works like a champ! These errors also seem to have no effect on Media
Center, which is a bonus as well.

Fatawan,

you could indeed try a repair.

Here is a tutorial on how to do a repair that I found handy to read
when doing a repair.

'How to automatically repair Windows Vista using Startup Repair'

hope this helps:)

Repair did not help. I also tried with firewall off, Defender off,

Anything else to try?

Re: Windows Update Error

Fatawan,

lets try rname the SoftwareDistribution folder (it will be recreated
next time you visit Windows Update)

Click Start, Choose Run.

In the Run box, type services.msc.

Click OK.

Right-click the Automatic Updates service.

Click Stop.

Stopping the service will take a moment.

Rename the “SoftwareDistribution” folder:

a. Click Start, click Run, type %systemroot%, and then click OK.
b. Right-click the SoftwareDistribution folder, and then click Rename.
c. Type SoftwareDistribution.old, and then press ENTER to rename this
folder.

Click Start. Choose Run.
In the Run box, type services.msc.
Click OK.
Right-click the Automatic Updates service.
Click Start.
Starting the service will take a moment.

regards
