Vista Full image backup to DVD's verify error

When I try to do a full image backup to DVD's, Vista says to label a disk #1
and insert it. It writes to the DVD and then starts verifying it. After
about the same elapsed time it took to write to the DVD, It says "There was
an error in verifying the disk, please discard the disk, label a blank disk
#1 and insert it."
Exploring the written DVD it appears to be OK. If I backup just files, It
doesn't verify and they seem to be all right. So it seems to be a problem
with the verify. Is there a work-around or a way to turn the verify off?

Don't be too quick to turn verify off on something as important as a
mirror image. Haven't tried, but I'll take a guess. When you verify it
does a checksum and compares what was written to the source. If it
don't match, EXACTLY, the backup is all but useless. One or more files
didn't copy exactly, probably. Of course the catch is you won't know
what file until you probably need it, then its too late.

Is this happening everytime?
I've seen it happen before but with a 2nd disc it went through ok.
Maybe try different media?

Yes every time, I've tried +R and -R DVD's and different brands. I've wasted
16 to 18 DVD's. i bought the computer from Dell. Dell says it's a Vista
problem and Microsoft says pay me and then we will talk.

Re: Vista Full image backup to DVD's verify error

I agree, but I can't get by the first DVD and I've tried +R ,-R and different
brands of DVDS's.

Re: Vista Full image backup to DVD's verify error

I'm having the same problem. Also a Dell, running Vista Ultimate.

I don't actually see it say "verifying" but I'm sure that's what it's
doing. It writes for awhile, then seems to go back to the beginning
(must be verifying), takes about the same amount of time, then I get a
message. But mine just repeats the initial message telling me to label
and insert disk 1.

I did a Complete PC Backup a couple of days ago and it worked. Now
that I've got everything set up the way I want it, I want another
image backup. I've been chatting online with a Dell support guy who
doesn't even know the difference between a file backup and an image
backup.

Any suggestions?

What are you using to backup? Either the full version of Nero or Easy
Creator do a much better job than any junk that comes preinstalled.

Dell support? Oxymoron. Ditto for Gateway or any so-called support for
any prebuilt box maker.

If you haven't discovered it yet, both Gateway and Dell have fairly
active newsgroups similar to this which you may find give more
specific answers to your particular brand.

There are several groups, use "Dell" as a search to find more.

Here's a fairly busy one:

I also received the message "Verifying backup disk..." However, I
could not insert another DVD when I was prompted to do so because the
DVD drive was locked.

I stopped the backup operation and discovered that the DVD drive was
not listed in the device manager until I rebooted the computer. I was
able to reproduce this issue three times in a row.

I reasoned that pre-installed software blocked Vista from recognizing
my DVD drive.

Otherwise, I've been able to backup files to the DVD drive and format
DVD RW disks several times. I decided to re-install the DVD driver and
eliminate conflicting software.

These steps lead to a solution:

I removed the following software:

Google Desktop
Earth Link Setup Files
All of the Roxio Creator & MyDVD 9.0 DE software

Next, I booted the system into safe mode and uninstalled
the DVD driver.

Afterwards, I shut down the computer.

Next, I restarted the computer and reinstalled the DVD Driver from the
folder C:\drivers\storage

These are the final steps I took:

Ran Disk cleanup
Ran Disk Defragmenter
Inserted a pre-formatted DVD
Started the Complete PC Backup Utility

As a result, I was able to backup my laptop to 2 DVDs.

I hope this helps. As with any new procedure, be sure to back up
your files first and be prepared to re-install your OS if necessary.
