Go to Program Defaults to change the file associations. -- Gary VanderMolen |

| Re: .PNG files no longer associate in IE7 I think the OP wants IE to display .png pictures as he browses, but not necessarily have IE as the default application to open files with a .png extension on his hard drive if he clicks on one. | Re: .PNG files no longer associate in IE7 But all othe graphics do display properly? If no graphics display, try this. There is a setting in IE - Tools - Inernet Options - Advanced tab scroll down to Multimedia and verify that 'show image download placeholders' is not checked and 'show pictures' is checked. | Re: .PNG files no longer associate in IE7 I have tried all fixes outlined in this newsgroup and nothing has helped. I can right click on a red x displayed image and copy and paste to desktop and open the image with every program but IE7/Vista. Firefox works fine as well. I have tried this as well: regsvr32 c:\windows\system32\pngfilt.dll I am using a brand new HP dv9000 that came with Vista Premium installed. After just one week of running the ability to display .png images in IE7 has gone away. I have tried running IE7 with no add ons. I've removed and reinstalled QuickTime. I have turned off my Eset NOD32 AV software. Show pictures is checked in advanced settings. All other image types display fine. Help! | Re: .PNG files no longer associate in IE7 This issue is affecting me too. IE does not display .png images. All other images display correctly. My registry has the mentioned entry, but it still does not work. I did some testing and found that if I log on as another user (IE: guest), then .png images display in IE7. Also, if I run IE as Administrator, .png's display. Furthermore, if I turn of UAC, .png's display. Only when I am logged on to my account, with UAC enabled, the .png's are blocked from IE. Everything else is working fine. I have tried re-setting IE back to factory settings, disabling all add-ins, turning off protected mode and phishing filters. My Multimedia settings in Advanced Options are correct. Lots of articles point to re-registering the pngfilt.dll file, but it is registered properly with the latest version. Also, if I try to re-register it using regsvr32, I get the same error message discussed in the 3/25 post. I believe this is a direct result of a problem with UAC. I still want to keep UAC enabled, but I would like to correct this problem without running IE as Admin all the time. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance. Jim |

| Re: .PNG files no longer associate in IE7 I'm sorry to say that for the first time ever, I downloaded and installed Firefox. This is the only solution that I can come up with now. I've spent countless days trying to run down a solution for this, but I can't waste anymore time. Firefox is working, so until more information is available, I am not going to use IE. At least I don't have to sacrifice UAC. I'm not giving up, its just that there is not a lot of information on this or the only information that is available relates to Windows XP. Good Luck! If anyone finds a solution, please post it here. Jim |

| Re: .PNG files no longer associate in IE7 Well, you could always use Firefox for general web browsing and when you need to look at a BMW page, use IE for that (unless they use .png's) I am using Firefox for almost everything, except 1 site that will not load under Firefox. Then I just open it in IE. I'm sure this is temporary. MSFT has always been responsive when it comes to correcting issues. Once they add this to the list of things to fix, it will be corrected. Will probably take some time, but I have faith in them. |

| Re: .PNG files no longer associate in IE7 There is acually a plugin for firefox, called IE Tab. It allows you to open tabs in firefox using the IE engine instead of the Firefox one. No need to start another browser just switch in firefox. But i still have the same poblem in IE7 as you guys have. and for me none of the fixes displayed on this site helps, not even creating another user. Now its just a waiting game. -- eijnok ------------------------------------------------------------------------ eijnok's Profile: http://forums.techarena.in/member.php?userid=24236 View this thread: http://forums.techarena.in/showthread.php?t=698806 http://forums.techarena.in |

| Re: .PNG files no longer associate in IE7 Turning of UAC did it for me! Funny thing is nobody has noticed or mentioned that the problem with IE7 displaying .png files is related to installing FireFox. I just bought a new PC with Vista Home Premium and everything was running fine until my friend said, "when are you going to install firefox?" And I did, and that's when IE7 stopped displaying .png's Why it has anything to do with UAC, I'm not sure, but turning of UAC got IE7 to display .pngs, bottom line... Thanks for your support guys, saved me $60 by not having to use Microsoft support... Rediculous... Thanks, Jay "JSandPC" wrote: > This issue is affecting me too. | Re: .PNG files no longer associate in IE7 i'm a computer tech. after working many hours about this problem, reinstalled sp2 2 times, reinstalled java and microsoft vm,reset explorer settings and alot other things. i found a solution. there were many problems with the ie6 caused probably by viruses. the first problem was that i couldn't type in text boxes and couldn't select text in web sites , in ie 6 ,after i found a solution for that in here: http://www.tek-tips.com/viewthread.cfm?qid=1302982 using the link Linney suggested: http://www.mvps.org/sramesh2k/IEFIX.htm , the png images still remained red x, it wasn't a java problem. i tried to update windows through windows update site , and i got an error which led me to a solution to the png problem. the error was :Error No.:0x80070424 Unable to download from site in Windows Update. and the soultion was here: http://forums.spywareinfo.com/lofiversion/index.php/t32538.html thank you t2miller and linney , great fix. i still have to fix the windows search though... -- ronenfe ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ronenfe's Profile: http://forums.techarena.in/member.php?userid=31649 View this thread: http://forums.techarena.in/showthread.php?t=698806 http://forums.techarena.in |
