| Advice: Vista Home Prem and NAS Just in case anyone else has this issue: I followed all the advice I could find but it was all the same, i.e. Change LMCompatibiltyLevel to 1 in the Registry... Still no luck connecting from Vista to a NAS (Terastation), however all was fine from an XP MCE PC to the NAS. A bit of further investigation confirmed that (for some unknown reason) the Laptop has been pre-configured so that the RPC Locator was blank. Not sure why it was like this, but the Wireless card on my DELL XPSM1710 was pre-configured like this. I set it to "Windows Locator". e.g. Select Manage Network Connections, select the properties of your network card, then Microsoft CLient Properties, then change the RPC Service provider. Hope that helps anyone else that may have this problem, because it was really winding me up for a few days, until I could find some time to look into it more (when the kids went to bed :-)). Regards, Paul P.S. I've just checked the RPC service again and it's gone blank! After typing this posting too! Ahh well, the NAS still works OK! Surely, that must have been the problem?! |

| Re: Advice: Vista Home Prem and NAS Art, TBH the Dell XPSM1710 isn't quite ready for Vista as the driver support isn't quite there. Well not in the bas build anyway, I'm yet to check their site for updates... I've had several issues, but overall Im still happy with Vista.. The main issue with the Terastation was that I could not authenticate to the device from Vista, but I could from several XP PC's in the same workgroup (and Im still having the same issue despite my orignal posting). It seems that whenever I re-select "Windows Locator" and give it the big OK, it works until I reboot (and maybe suspend), but then it goes back to it's weird default 'blank' and I can't connect to the NAS again. It's a bit frustrating. I'll see if I can find anything on Dells site, if not I'll raise a call with them. | Re: Advice: Vista Home Prem and NAS Did anyone get a solution to this? I have the same problem connecting to a file server on my network. Coincidentally, I am also using a Dell (e520). The "Windows Locator" setting will simply not stay selected. I spent an hour chatting with Dell who said that Vista does not support "Microsoft Locator" - same thing? Extremely frustrating. | Re: Advice: Vista Home Prem and NAS Unfortunately not.. I'm not impressed by Dells decision to use the Vista Upgrade on the XPSM1710 as it has resulted in lots of frustration. I'll be contacting Dell support soon to request XP. Paul "czpdx" wrote: [color=blue] > Did anyone get a solution to this? I have the same problem connecting to a > file server on my network.
