| Windows Live Messenger 8.1 80048820 error on Vista I have just got a new PC with Windows Vista on and have installed WLM 8.1 - however every time I try to sign in it fails with an error 80048820. I have checked firewall (even turned it off), and it makes no difference. When you click 'Troubleshoot' it fails at the first one and says "Your machine appears to have an invalid IP address", however the internet connection etc is working fine for everything else (browsing etc). Running IP Config gives... PPP adapter Speedtouch Broadband: Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 84.65.151.49 Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.255 Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 0.0.0.0 This is a USB modem. I followed the help steps here: http://help.live.com/EN_US/HelpWindow_msg.asp?INI=WL_Messengerv1_1.ini&H_VER=1.7&SearchTerm=80048820&H_APP=Windows%20Live%20Messenger&S_Text=For%20help%20on%20Windows%20Live%20Messenger%2C%20select%20a%20topic%3A&ContactUs=&v4=DH_FREE But none of them corrected it - the last section was strange as several of the DLL's would not register, for example: "The module "wintrust.dll" was loaded but the call to DllRegisterServer failed with error code 0x80070005" Tried uninstalling WLM and then reinstalling to no avail. Tried deleting the registry keys for WLM and Windows Messenger but no difference. Strange thing was when I *first* installed it it did work for a little while, but after using the PC for a while and restarting it stopped and now just will not connect. Help! |

I've managed to fix it, and after all the trouble I went to I can't believe how simple the fix was! On the WLM sign-in screen I had ticked the box to "Remember Me" (it had worked the first couple of times), and below that was a 'Forget Me' link. I just clicked 'Forget Me' then re-entered the details and it worked perfectly! Trying all those other registry things, uninstalling etc., had been to no avail, but that did it! Doh! Only took me about two hours of pulling my hair out. :-) Cheers all anyway. |

| Re: Windows Live Messenger 8.1 80048820 error on Vista The installation fails because you have left overs in your registry. Clean them with a 'registry cleaner' (http://www.pc-kitchen.com). -- andysacks ------------------------------------------------------------------------ andysacks's Profile: http://forums.techarena.in/members/andysacks.htm View this thread: http://forums.techarena.in/vista-help/697088.htm http://forums.techarena.in |

Leftovers don't help you, and registry cleaning programs are *all* snake oil. Cleaning of the registry isn't needed and is dangerous. Leave the registry alone and don't use any registry cleaner. Despite what many people think, and what vendors of registry cleaning software try to convince you of, having unused registry entries doesn't really hurt you. The risk of a serious problem caused by a registry cleaner erroneously removing an entry you need is far greater than any potential benefit it may have.
