| Anybody Else Hate Vista? I just "met" my first Vista machine (OEM install) and, so far at least, I absolutely HATE it. It's by far the slowest OS I've set-up, so slow that it's aggravating. Am I alone or does anybody else feel this way? -- Art Cabot Director, Information Technology Sizemore, Inc. |

| Re: Anybody Else Hate Vista? A lot of people hate it for a lot of reasons. But it isn't inherently slow. I'm running it on a plain-vanilla P4 with 1GB RAM and a SATA 150 drive. It's running at least as fast as XP. Actually, faster when you consider how quickly you can get around without all that relentless navigating through folders, opening programs, and such. I'm certainly not waiting around for anything to happen. | Re: Anybody Else Hate Vista? I've been VERY happy with my Vista Ultimate. The only thing I'm wafting for is the new release of iTunes. Otherwise, I'm golden. Vista has been fast, and the UI is very nice. Maybe the issue is too many people are trying to install on old hardware? I felt that way when I first started setting up my OEM-Vista-equipped Vaio laptop. While I can find fault with Vista without really looking hard I don't hate it. In my opinion, and I'm surely not alone, Microsoft dropped the ball with their clumsy implementation of UAC, (User Account Control) that's suppose to provide better security and in reality for many will only end up being a nag, worse than any mother-in-law, endlessly harping about access and permissions. That's my big beef with Vista. How much UAC is a issue for you or not, depends on what you ask your computer to do, what hardware and software you have and how some tasks run under special permissions or not which may have worked fine and transparently under XP, but now, for some, may cause UAC to bitch like your wife at that time of month. <wink> I don't see that as a feature, it can be and is for me a huge annoyance that was not thought out well and obviously not well tested under real world situations. I hate all the time I've wasted messing with UAC when it constantly intefers with what I'm trying to do on MY COMPUTER because it doesn't work as advertised and it insisting it runs my computer rather then ME running it. UAC for the most part is hand holding for dummies. It doesn't really protect anything. It simply nags are you sure you want to do something. The first time you may find such a warning amusing, the second and third time you'll get annoyed, after that you may start cursing at UAC because it won't shut up. The rest of Vists brings some nice features, mostly refinements, nothing earth shaking. Lots of little tweaks, better implementation for some things, for sure if your have Aero running a much prettier Windows if that's your kind of thing. Some will like those changes, others won't. That's human nature. Another annoying thing until you get used it is common controls for everyday tasks have been switched around or moved had a facelift, that too is common in each upgrade of Windows. Just takes a little getting use to and causes some fumbling around until you retrain yourself. Build-in search options have undergone a lot of change. Again some will love that, others won't. As far as speed, my experience (your mileage may vary) it is marginally faster doing some things, noticeablly faster on a few applications, others about the the same as XP. I don't see anything running slower. If you see that, chances are you have driver issues or Registry bloat or some kind of configuration issue. On the negative side, some issues that have plagued Windows for years, decades actually for some, still haven't been fixed. Hung applications can't always be shut down promply, even from Task Manager or at all without hitting the power switch on your PC. Windows Explorer while having some nice improvements can and still does hang, your desktop icons still get redrawn for no rhyme or reason out of the blue, shutdown can take minutes for no particular reason, Windows will nag and balk over trivial issues, but it has always done that. Media Player is still too dumb to always play supported file types, thumbnails may or may not appear correctly with or without Registry hacks, new goofy network issues have been noted. Again, you expect such things early in a release. |

| Re: Anybody Else Hate Vista? We are all Microsoft drones. We eat whatever Microsoft gives us. How could we not love it? We are Emm Vee Pees (MVP's) and vistaboy fans. We have made shrines to vista and pray 3 times daily. We also are ready to insult, ridicule and call trolls whoever has a different opinion than we do. We call all this advancement and progress. We are free to say how great vista is on this newsgroup, but when someone complains, we ask them if they have any problem.. if they are just here to complain, then we discourage him as much as possible. You see we cant have people in here who actually think! Thought is a dangerous thing.. We sit in front of our vista glass screens hypnotized by the animated wallpaper... No one should disrupt our bliss!!! | Re: Anybody Else Hate Vista? Art, I thought the same thing when I first installed the Vista Business. Everything was running very slow and my mouse would free up quite frequently for 10-20 seconds. As a developer I was about ready to trash it and go back to XP. That was when I realized that one of my external drives (USB 2.0 connected) couldn't be recognized and that Vista was constantly pinging it. I unplugged the device and rebooted... This have worked well since that point. I'm really mystified by those that say that Vista runs slow. My experience is that it's very fast. Mine is Home Premium, clean install on a home built computer with Core 2 Duo, 1 GB, 128 mb video card. Example: I have a folder in IE favorites called "Daily stuff" with seven web sites I read each day (news, comics, etc.). From the time I start the computer, open the web sites, and shut down the computer, Vista is 5 minutes faster than my previous computer (admittedly, a Pentium 3, 500 mhz, Windows 98) or my laptop with Pentium 4, 2.6 ghz, and XP. |

| Re: Anybody Else Hate Vista? Actually, the more bitching and moaning in here is good for the development of service packs and future releases of Windows. So many people are fed up with UAC, that I'm sure in the next release of Windows, there will be something similar, but a LOT more transparent. The problem that most people in here have (Vista Fanboys, MVP's, whatever), is the trolls. They don't contribute to anything, recommend that they leave Vista for OSX or Linux or BSD or MS-DOS; with no suggestions to fix their problem. If they are asking for help, and we turn them away to go to OSX, they lose the help they need and want. Does Vista have it's problems: HELL YES! Do I still like Vista: HELL YEA! I've been with almost every Microsoft release since DOS 5. All have had their problems, and it all ends up good in the end. I've also used quite a few Linux distros, OSX and a little BSD. They all have their great points, and their bad points. Let's just help them out to make their PC use fun and productive. They have Vista, and they have a problem that needs fixed. MVP or average Joe, we can all contribute. Just stop the worthless posts and trolling. They don't help anyone, and they're a pain to filter through when looking for some genuine help. -- Dustin Harper dharper@vistarip.com http://www.vistarip.com -- "nick" <1@1.1> wrote in message news:uHrB1sbXHHA.3824@TK2MSFTNGP02.phx.gbl... > We are all Microsoft drones.
