The search facility in Vista

I am not liking the way the search works in Vista the way it starts
searching as you type into the search box. I know its a new feature and
people are supposed to like it and its supposed to make using Windows easier
but I am really beginning to hate it. Is there a way of turning off that
feature and just being able to write the whole word in the box and then
search for the word?

Cheers,

Andy.

You beat me to the punch.

I hate it.

I liked XP's options just fine. But how can we get them back?

Use Advanced search then. But also read Help.

Re: The search facility in Vista

What is it about that function you don't like? Does it keep you from
continuing to type as you type out your word?

Some people complain about that and it's not normal. It should let you type
in your whole word with no problem just like XP. The only thing you're
missing is having to click a button or hit enter. What does it starting
it's search before your done typing have to do with anything?

In other words, what is the negative impact you are experiencing with this
new feature?

How long have you been using Vista? I hated it for the first couple of
months. Now I think it's the best feature in Vista.

Turn off indexing and it won't search until you tell it to.

I don't like being forced to use something I don't like without an option to
turn it off :-)

Re: The search facility in Vista

I run most programs by typing the name in. Even in XP it was faster than
navigating the menus with the mouse. In XP you had to press WinKey-R then
type the full name of the program including the extension. If you made a
spelling mistake you were out of luck. Start search in Vista remembers what
you have typed in the past. After you type something in a couple of times
you only have to type two or three letters and it's at the top of the list.
Even if you haven't typed it before it is usually at the top of the list
before you finish typing it out. Press Enter and the program runs. I also do
a lot of quotes for customers with Excel. I start typing the customer's name
and by the time I've typed four or five letters the file is usually at the
top of the list as long as their name is anywhere in the quote. Press Enter
and it loads. It has made me much more productive.

But then again you can't explain why you don't like it? It's not impacting
you negatively in anyway. You simply just don't like the fact that it finds
what you are searching for instantly for no good reason?

As was mentioned, you can turn indexing off. But you can kiss your super
fast search speeds goodbye.

Fair enough. It sounds like you don't need it. So it would not be a
consideration for you to buy Vista.

I'm not speaking directly to you, Stephen.

Why is this so hard for people to understand?

Vista has X amount of new features. But just because someone doesn't need a
feature they call Vista a failure and worse then XP? Linux wins?

Vista has new features. For those that want them, GREAT! For those that
don't, who cares? Use something else.

What would have been wrong with the logic of providing new features but also
able to turn them off in a control panel somewhere for the people that want
the security and updated operating system that Vista offers but at the same
time don't want gimmicks or extra features?

I personally want Vista - but on the other hand I want to be in control of
what features I want to enable or not. Where does that place me?
