Hi,

I currently have Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 running on my PC.
I bought a Windows Anytime Upgrade form a seller on eBay last week. When I
bought it, I thought it was just a "normal" uprade but it was "Anytime".
Before installation I read through the elp and support file on the DVD that
tells you ehat to have ready.

On one bullet point it says, have your 25-digit product key available. This
upgrade doesn't have a key with it. On the back of the cover it has an EPN
number and a GPN number along with a bar code. (What is this?). There are
no other keys to be found anywhere. On the DVD itself it has a warning
saying "Only valid if equipped with original Computer. Sale or repruduction
of this copy is unlawful" or something like that.

I don't want to try to install now because I fell like at one point I will
be stuck with Vista asking for a key that I don't have, and then XP has
already been erased.

What should I do here?

Why don't you contact the E-Bay seller either by e-mail or by phone, and ask
him/her the questions you ask here?? The seller should be able to answer your
questions, and if not, ask for refund????

I have, but all I have not received an answer yet. All I said in the first
email was that they needed to supply me with a 25 digit code. All I got back
was. "Just put the dvd in and let it sntall, key is on back of case". The
codes on the back of the case are not 25 digit codes but EPN and GPN Codes.

I guess I wanted to check with everybody here to see if someone knew
something I didn't about the GPN and EPN codes. Do you know what that stands
for?

I went to E-Bay and found one seller selling Windows Anytime Upgrade and I
paid great attention to his description of the Product for sale. It says as
follows:

You are bidding on a brand new 64-bit Windows Vista Business to Ultimate
Upgrade...This upgrade may also be used to upgrade Windows Vista Home or
Windows Vista Home Premium as well (hasn't been tested, not sure if it works,
and will not be held liable if it doesn't)...You can perform a clean install
provided that you have a serial key for the Windows Vista you would like to
install (i.e. if you have a serial key for Windows Vista Home, then it will
install Windows Vista Home, if you have a serial key for Windows Vista
Ultimate, it will install Windows Vista Ultimate, etc.)...This does not come
with its own serial key; you must already own a copy of a previous version of
Windows Vista in order to perform upgrade...Buy "as is" with no

Windows Anytime Upgrade is for going from one version of Vista to a
different version of Vista. For example, going from Home Basic to Home
Premium. It cannot be used to upgrade XP to Vista.

You should contact the seller and return the item. Did the seller properly
represent the product in their listing as being Anytime Upgrade? If not,
contact eBay and let them know about the fraudulent sales practices that the
seller employed. You might have a case anyway based on the wording that you
quote above on the DVD about "sale ... of this copy is unlawful".

Doesn't that make it sound like it is a normal upgrade from XP to Vista?
The picture on the auction is not the same either. I think this person may
have received this upgrade with their computer and decided to sell it.

If the version you received was stated as just the same as a retail version,
then I would think that a key should come with it... Ask for a key or a
refund, or contact E-Bay about possible actions available to you..

Based on that wording, they were fraudulent in that what they shipped you
does not match that description. This may or may not have been intentional
on their part so I would start by contacting the seller and then follow-up
with eBay if you do not get a satisfactory response from the seller.

Yeah, I just have to file disputes now on Ebay and Paypal.
