I have a user account for each family member on our PC (Home Premium). Some
have better eyesight than other, so some want bigger fonts.

When you bring up the Personalization window, "adjust DPI" is one option.
However it appears to be a global setting; if my wife makes it larger, for
example, it changes every user's account (and requires a reboot to apply).

That doesn't seem to be "personal", if it affects everyone. What am I doing
wrong?

try this: click Right mouse button anywhere on vista desktop then click
"personalize" click window color & appearance.
Then click on: open Classic appearance properties for more color option at
bottom of page.
Click on advanced in the appearance settings window then on desktop. Click
on "Icon" then change font to a size(drop down box) that pleasing to you. I
changed mine to 15. You also make it bold by clicking on the "B".

That works on icon text, but it doesn't affect icon size (which the 'other'
setting does)...I guess I just don't understand why it's called
'personalization' if it's a global setting.

Go back & look again size is there too adjust the icons to any size you
want.
