I purchased the Belkin Easy Transfer Cable to transfer my XP files to Vista
but I get an error message on my XP computer saying there is a scanning
error. Has anyone else had this problem?

The installation went off without a hitch but when I get to the point where
I can choose what to transfer that's when I get the "scanning" error message.
It just appears it can't scan my hard drive on my XP PC.

On the Vista computer type " migwiz " (without the quotes) in Search.
Click on migwiz up above (Programs) and OK the UAC alert.
Tell migwiz that there is no connection - that the XP box needs a CD.
It will make a CD. Run the CD on the XP computer. It ought to do its
collection and take advantage of the Belkin USB cable connection.

will now be cancelled"

I have Windows firewall, anti-virus, spyware all turned off. I even have
file sharing turned on.

If you are trying to move Lotus Notes, there is a known issue:

If neither of these things fit your case, rather than attempting to
get support, or analyze log files, you could decide that Difficult
Transfer would be easier than troubleshooting migwiz, and
copy the files to the new computer and recreate the settings.

Some people enjoy troubleshooting. I'd rather just get it done.

"vista certified cables", wireless home network, wired home network, and
external hard drive. The issue is, as previously stated, an inability for the
software to read from the source (XP in this case) hard drive. I am the
administrator, I have switched off Zone alarm, windows firewall, avg, even
unplugged the wireless card when using the cables. All manners work fine in
terms of connecting the 2 pcs. So why does the software not read the source
hard drive!!! Unacceptable Microsoft!! Should legally evaluate the term
"easy" which is being used!

Right. The issue before was with a XP home machine (2 year old Dell laptop).
I'm now having the same problem with an XP media centre edition machine (4
month old Compaq). So 2 completely differnt pcs and OS'. Why does this
useless program not read from a hard drive?? Has Microsoft nothing to say
for their worthless piece of software?

What are you trying to accomplish? Which useless program are you referring
to? My Vista machine will read and write from and to the XP machine. My XP
machine will read from and write to the Vista machine. Via a wired LinkSys
router. Apparently settings are wrong. This leads one to believe that thee
problem lies between the chair and the keyboard.

transfer files from Windows ME to Vista, XP to Vista and XP to XP. No

This post has nothing to do with connecting an XP pc and Vista pc. I have a
mixed 9 all connected together with no problems. The issue is with the easy
transfer software.

I am using the easy transfer software from Microsoft. When I install it onto
either a XP home or XP media centre pc and run the backup utility or transfer
utility the software crashes and stops, where it says it cannot read from the
source disk. Yes I am logged in as an admin. I can get an ethernet, wireless,
and transfer cable all to connect between XP and Vista with no problem, but
the software will not read from the source disk. The software will not read
from the hard disk of either pc and I have tried all the above conenctions,
as well as, trying to backup the XP user data onto a network drive,
additional local drive, external drive, DVD.. all fail with the error that
the local disk cannot be read. Hopefully I was clearer this time.

I am having the same problem transferring from my old XP with same scan disk
error. I downloaded easy transfer companion, which successfully scans my old
computer, but when trying to run companion on the new Vista computer, there
is an error message: Your computer appears to be running two operating
systems and companion is not configured to work with this or some such.

That is my problem also. I tried several times to transfer my files and data
via WET, but have had no luck, b/c my Windows XP/old computer locks up and
does not complete the transfer. I downloaded the WETC, made a copy and
installed on old computer, and now I experience the exact same problem Al D
has listed. Are there any answers?

My suggestion in this thread months ago was to do a difficult transfer if
the easy transfer software wasn't working for you. Having bought the
Belkin cable, Moe Man might have looked to Belkin for support:

Maybe Moe Man reconsidered and went with Charles W Davis suggestion
that he spend $60 for a transfer setup a chimpanzee can make work:

video.

The way Microsoft has support configured, you can go to the equipment
manufacturer if Vista came with your computer, or if you bought the full
Vista DVD, you are entitled to a couple of free incidents:

If not, it kind of looks like they want $245 - but I'm not sure about that.

Michael: Thanks for the response.

I'm not using a Belkin cable - I'm using my home network but the machines
are communicating just fine. I can manually move files across the network.

I don't think I should have to pay for a 3rd party program to give me the
functionality MS claims for WET.

HP said to try running Scandisk and Defrag. I'll try that tonight.
