WordStar 4 Compatibility Under Vista

WordStar 4 is an excellent DOS word processing program. I use it
daily for editing programs and formatting data. It has a column mode
that is still better than anything else I have seen and can deal with
very long lines unlike most other word processors. It works well
under XP (with a little tweaking) and I would like to know if anyone
has tried it under Vista. I'm also curious if Qbasic and DOS Edit work
under Vista without resorting to DOSbox. My main concern is for
programs I use at work since, based on everything I've heard about
Vista, XP will be the last Microsoft OS I run at home.

Vista doesn't support full-screen console unless you install XP (XDDM)
video drivers instead of Vista video drivers (WDDM).

The reason WDDM drivers do not support full-screen console is because
they do not allow int10 access required to do this.

The only way to get full-screen DOS programs working under Windows
Vista is to install the XP drivers (not recommended) or use an
emulation or virtualization program like DosBox/VirtualBox/VPC/Vmware/
etc.

This is interesting to note! According to this article, expanded memory is
available, but no one has gotten it to work:

So, yeah, time to dump your DOS programs!

I haven't tried to use EMS in Vista because I've been using DosBox
exclusively since 2003. I do know that the no ems problem in NT4/2K/XP/
2003 was caused by integrated hardware eating up the memory addresses
that NTVDM was trying to use to allocate EMS and since Windows is
being conservative with where you can map memory addresses then the
only way around this is to either disable the hardware that is eating
those memory ranges or to modify the Windows registry to remap the
addresses.

Here's one of many threads on the issue @ VOGONS:

It's 2007. It's time to let go.
