To All With Vista TV Tuner Card Problems

Here's what I found after struggling with the "No TV tuner installed" message
while setting up TV in Vista Home Premium Media Center:
1. Go to Computer Management...Services and Applications...Services
2. Find Windows Media Center Receiver Service (this is what keeps failing)
3. Look at the "Log On" setting (mine said Network Service)
4. Right-click this service, select Properties, select Log On tab.
5. Look at the "This account:" section (should list what login account is
running the service).
6. Change the username to the Administrator account setup within Vista
(usually your username) and enter the password for this account --Select
Browse...type the username...select "Check Names"...click OK.
7. Re-type the password for this account int the Password & Confirm
password fields (don't accept the password it auto-fills with).
8. Click Apply...OK.
9. Left-click the Windows Media Center Receiver Service (if not already
selected) and select the "Restart" button on the Toolbar (last icon with
green arrow).
10. Check service to make sure it's Status is Started.
11. Crank up Media Center and try your TV setup again...it worked for me
after this routine.

So, what this all means...Vista security is a beast (that's why you have to
select allow on everything you try to run). I'm an IT Network Administrator
and this problem just about brought me to my knees! Hell, even Microsoft
apparently hasn't figured this out even with all the forum posters having the
same problem with numerous different "Vista Compatible" TV cards. This isn't
the first time I've had to figure out Microsoft's problems for them.

Anyway, please post back if this helps or doesn't. I'm curious to know if
this resolution helps all or none.

BTW---I have an Angel Dual Tuner TV card, which offered Vista drivers on the
manufacturer's website: www.lumanate.com

RE: To All With Vista TV Tuner Card Problems

Not a genius, just very persistant!! This beat me all weekend, then, I had an
epiphany all of a sudden. When checking the Services, I'd never seen a logon
account called Network Service (this is new to Vista, apparently). Since I'm
a seasoned IT professional, I've had experiences with having to run certain
networked applications using a specific login account (usually the Domain
Admin). So, I decided to try my local PC admin account (my login) to see what
happens. Luckily, this solved OUR problems. You'd think Microsoft would have
figured this out during testing of Vista, but, I've had to figure out their
problems before and report the solution to them...Go figure. Anyway, I'm glad
I could help another frustrated user. One man's pain is another's pleasure. :)

RE: To All With Vista TV Tuner Card Problems

Have you checked the manufacturer's website for driver updates for your TV
tuner card? One way to see if there are driver updates is to find it in
Device Manager, right-click...select update driver...and select Search
Automatically. This option found the Vista drivers for my TV card, so I think
it will work for you. If not, got directly to the manufacturer's website and
search for driver updates for your particular version/model card. Also, run
the Vista Upgrade Advisor to make sure that it's compatible. Also, check your
Event Logs for any errors pertaining to Media Center or your TV card. This
may give information that you can use to search for a solution. Other than
these suggestions, I can't offer any other in-depth answers without being
able to physically work on your PC and check things that are too in-depth for
me to discuss in this forum (I'd have to write a book to explain most of it).
Well, good luck and keep searching Microsoft's forums for answers to your
problems.

I've tried fixing the problem following the above steps and now the
problem is that the heRecvr service doesn't want to start.

The error code is "0x80070015: The device is not ready"

Can someone please help?

Thanks

BTW---I have WinTV PVR-150 MCE tuner PCI card.

RE: To All With Vista TV Tuner Card Problems

Your solution worked. Now I just have to figure out why my Hauppauge PVR-150
remote doesn't control anything but volume. Two quick details for laymen
like myself:

1) To access Computer Management, go to START>Program Files>Administrator
Tools>Computer Management
2) If you didn't declare an administrator password, you will get a logon
error at Step #9. To declare password, START>Control Panel>User
Accounts>Change Password

Thanks for the help nyoung.

Re: To All With Vista TV Tuner Card Problems

Since I don't use the WinTV PVR (Hauppauge) product, it's hard for me to
guess what could be wrong. I suggest going to Hauppauge's support site and
look for Vista drivers (go here:
http://www.hauppauge.com/pages/suppo...rt_pvr150.html ). Unfortunately,
I've read several posts in this forum (search for WinTV PVR-150 and select
"warning about hauppauge product") that states these cards are not/will not
be upgraded for Vista support. It really sucks when a company dictates when
you have to purchase another piece of harware (I suggest not to purchase the
same company brand).

Other than that, try to do the same with the ehRecvr Service that I
suggested in my original post. For that matter, do it with all of the
services that your TV card uses--it won't hurt anything to try. Who knows, it
just might work! That's how I solved my problem...trying something new on
something that doesn't work anyway. Good luck!

RE: To All With Vista TV Tuner Card Problems

Brendan,

I've noticed that you are using the WinTV PVR-150 TV card. Please refer to
the post by luiseeileen, previous to your post. Perhaps you can help with her
problem, since you have the same card. I'm glad I could be of at least some
help to you. Try to look for an updated driver for your remote on
Hauppauge's website:
http://www.hauppauge.com/pages/suppo...rt_pvr150.html.
Althought, I've seem some pretty disturbing posts concerning the Hauppauge
products stating that they are not planning to support Vista for certain
products (including your's). Good luck!

It works great!!! but what I liked about MCE is that I could set it to
record a program/series without me having to be phisically at the
desk...any suggestions???

Re: To All With Vista TV Tuner Card Problems

Nyoung, thanks so so so so so much..
this was of such a help.

here is my story.
i had winfast dvr 2000 xp deluxe.. but i decided to upgrade it with
vista since media center wont detect it in vista so i thought i would
buy a vista compatible,
so today i bought the Hauppauge 150 MCE, and it just wont cooperate
with me.. tried every single thing...changing slots. removing some
hardware ..looking for support on hauppauge's site with no luck and
finally i found yours and it worked the first time..
the card still wont work in my winfast DVR program but it works in
media center...
the only slight problem i had was when i entered my admin account
name.. i left the pass field empty since i had no pass setup.. but then
it wont start the service... so i setup the password and it did start
then...
so its all good..

thanks bunch.. again.

following up on the same note.. i installed vista again on another
drive but this time Media Center detected by Tuner with no problem
Soo i guess its just random.
although i did update my driver via the hauppauge site..b4 attempting
to start media center. (although windows update is showing a newer
driver out for my card)
