| Re: "Directory name invalid" when clicking .exe-file Thanks for the reply, but 1. Vista supports FAT and 2. I said "even if I copy ... to a FAT formatted disk", implying that it was on an NTFS disk before. | Re: "Directory name invalid" when clicking .exe-file Hi, Thank you for posting in the Microsoft newsgroup! From your post, my understanding on this issue is: you couldn't run exe files. If I'm off base, please feel free to let me know. Thanks to MukulKShama and Rick for their key in. Regarding the screen shot, you are using a roaming directory. Can you tell me the server side information (OS version; service pack)? And please try to fix the problem by giving domain users group the following privilege on the roaming directory on your server: Traverse Folder\Execute File List Folder/Read Data Read attributes Create Folders/append data Read Permissions You may need to access the advanced settings of the security tab in the directory properties. You can click Add button and add the domain users group into the permission entries list and set the proper privileges. | Re: "Directory name invalid" when clicking .exe-file Thanks everyone. The problem solved itself. The files became accessible after some time. Strangely, not all files were accessible at once, it took some days for all files to become accessible again. I have no idea what that was. Security settings were ok, files were not on a network. Seemed to be a problem of UAC, because it occurred mainly with programs requiring admin rights. (Not sure anymore if other programs were affected, too.) Thanks again, best regards mister.jones "Sean Cai [MSFT]" <v-secai@online.microsoft.com> schrieb im Newsbeitrag news:AxVIj8MWHHA.2356@TK2MSFTNGHUB02.phx.gbl... > Hi, > > Thank you for posting in the Microsoft newsgroup! > > From your post, my understanding on this issue is: you couldn't run exe > files. So I took the message literally and moved the .exe into a directory under "Program Files" and it ran happily. Then copied the entire contents of my installation CD into a directory under "Program Files" and that was able to install. So an easy fix, but does anybody know what's going on here? Our two best theories are (A) the application needs an accompanying manifest file or (B) there is a Windows policy setting "Only Run Executables >From Program Files, No We Didn't Think This Through" Al |

| Re: I found this information on Technet and it seems to explain this problem. User Account Control: Only elevate UIAccess applications that are installed in secure locations There are two possible values: · The system will only give UIAccess privileges and user rights to executables that are launched from under %ProgramFiles% or %windir%. The ACLs on these directories ensure that the executable is not user- modifiable (which would otherwise allow elevation of privilege). UIAccess executables launched from other locations will launch without additional privileges (i.e. they will run "asInvoker"). · Disabled - The location checks are not done, so all UIAccess applications will be launched with the user's full access token upon user approval. Default = Enabled Supposedly this option is access via the secpol.msc snap-in. I do not know how to access or get to that but I think I could and then change that option to disabled it would solve the problem. Please reply if you know how to get to this option. Thanks, Donovan |
