Computer won't go to sleep - HELP

I am having the same problem with the HP Pavilian desktop I just purchased.
It has Windows Vista Home Premium, and when I try to put the computer to
sleep, it wakes almost immediately. I have spent hours on the phone with HP,
and they can't seem to solve my problem. I to not have quickbooks or any of
those. However, I do have TurboTax loaded (which is an Intuit product).
Does anyone really have a solution to this problem for a desktop pc?

If you have a cable modem, put it on standby before putting the computer to
sleep.

I guess it was the cable modem. Go figure. I never had a problem with the
modem, in XP.

RE: Computer won't go to sleep - HELP

Don't know about HP but I have had an identical problem with an Asus A8V
Deluxe mobo.

To see what's happening, go to the Event Viewer => Windows Logs => System =>
Right-click, Save events as, and save as a TEXT file. The text file shows
chapter and verse of what's going on and will identify what is waking the
system up. In my case it was a USB hub.

It turns out that on my mobo (and maybe yours too), not everything is
controlled by the BIOS. My A8V Deluxe manual shows that there are 3 jumpers
relating to USB which by default are set to wake up from S1 sleep. These
need to be changed to the 'S3 and S4' position. I re-jumpered the board and
now everything works fine!

The solution was to change 3 jumpers on the mobo relating to USB wake-up.
These were bt d

RE: Computer won't go to sleep - HELP

It is certainly to do with the power management of the following devices:
1. USB wireless keyboard/mouse
2. Internal Dial up modem
3. Ethernet adapter for LAN or USB connection.
You need to disable power management for the above mentioned devices from
device manager:
WORKAROUND
To work around this problem, plug the USB device into an Enhanced Host
Controller Interface (EHCI) host controller.

Alternatively, disable the USB device's ability to wake the computer. To do
this, follow these steps:1. Click Start, right-click Computer, and then click
Manage.
2. In the User Account Control dialog box, click Continue.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation,
type the password, or click Allow.
3. Click Device Manager, expand Universal Serial Bus controllers,
right-click all the USB device entries, and then click Properties.
4. Click the Power Management tab, disable the Allow this device to wake the
computer check box, and then click OK.
Follow steps 3 and 4 for network card as well dial modem.

Problem solved.

RE: Computer won't go to sleep - HELP

Further to my last post regarding the won't sleep problem, a futher problem I
had was that on resumption from sleep, I lost one of my two optical drives -
it no longer appeared in Device Manager and there was an entry in the Event
Log that the cdrw drive had disappeared. Re-jumpering the mobo not only
fixed the sleep problem - it also fixed the problem of the disappearing
optical drive.

RE: Computer won't go to sleep - HELP

Thanks for the tip about the Event Viewer - I just looked at mine, and in
respect of sleep it says...

Wake Source: Unknown"
