Just built a new system with a P5B Deluxe and Vista Ultimate. Had one
issue in the setup process but I worked that out.

Now I have an issue with running Vista. Every once in awhile when
loading a program or moving files around Vista seems to pause. For
example say I go to load Word. I click on the Icon then Vista will
take about 5 to 10 secs before it even starts to load the program.
Like it has to think about what it has to do before it does it.

I do notice the HDD light on when it does this. I have installed the
latest drivers from Intel. As well as the latest drivers for all
add-ons.

My computer:

P5B Deluxe Bios 1004
Intel E6600
2 WD 74gb Raptors Raid 0 (Sata1 & Sata 2)
2 WD 250gb hard drives Raid 0 (Sata 3 & Sata 4)
Nec DVD-rw on Ide connector
ATI Radeon X1950 Pro (with latest Vista Drivers)
Corsair XMS2 Twin2x2048-6400C4
SB Audigy2

I have not yet activated Vista yet to make sure everything is working
ok. In Device Manager there are no devices that need attention.

Anyone know what the issue might be?

Ok to follow up I checked Administrative Tools, Events Viewer. This is
what I found

"\Device\Ide\iaStor0 did not respond within the timeout period"

One other thing about the way Vista handles memory. I looked into Task
Manager. Physical Memory reports 1520+MB Cached and 38MB Free. Is this
normal?

The pb5 has hardware SATA controlleron board and is manufactured by Jmicron
technologies, on the ASUS web site a software driver (Beta) is available to
address this issue.

It is normal, and desirable, to have free memory as close to zero as
possible in Vista.

Vista handles memory much differently that XP did. In XP free RAM was left -
well free. In Vista it is all designated as being used for the cache (super
prefetch).

performance is lower than you expected. If I'm off base, please feel free
to let me know.

By my experience, your problem is caused by an incompatible driver. I think
Innes's advice will help you resolve it.

Sean and Everyone,

Thanks for the replies. I have a feeling it may be a driver issue (at
least I am hoping). I keep checking "Event Viewer" and as of this date
I have had 389 errors reports with iaStor.

The only time I time I am getting these errors is when there now is
any disk activity. Also when using a program I am getting "This
Program in not Responding" in the Title bar. I am guessing this is
because of the Intel issue.

I have downloaded the Intel Raid Drivers fromt the Intel website as
well as the JMicron Raid and non-Raid drivers from the Asus website. I
can say this has not resovled my issue.

I have one option that I may try this weekend. As in my original post
I have to WD 74gb Raptors setup as Raid 0. I may try installing Vista
Ultimate on just one of the Raptors. Since I have not yet activated
Vista yet this gives me some options to play until I can get this
working.

For the most part I do like Vista. Sure I have a couple of other
issues but they are minor. This Intel Raid controller and Vista is my
only major issue I am having.

Hi Bill,

In addition to installing Vista without raid, I suggest we test the system
with the minimum hardware. Detach any hardware which is not necessary to
narrow down the issue (like the DVD-RW).

Please let me know the result on your test.

I was going to try something this weekend. Last night that option came
sooner then expected.

I play World of Warcraft. While playing last night the game froze. I
thought it was just an in-game glitch. Upon getting back to Windows
Desktop I got an error that said something like "This program was not
designed to run under Windows". So I re-booted my computer. Well right
after POST the Raid Bios told me I had a Failed setup. Just happened
to be the one where World of Warcraft is on.

So I got frustrated and had to try something. I deleted all Raid 0
setups. And ran all drives as standard IDE. Cleared the Bios, reset
all the settings that I needed and re-installed Vista.

Vista installed in less that 20 minutes maybe a little more. And
overall performance seems alot better. I am still waiting a while
before I actually Activate. Just want to make sure I have no other
hardware issues.

I do have one issue with the Microsoft Games panel (Solitaire,
Minesweeper, Chess). Yesterday after the install I tried playing a
couple of the games. Worked fine. Now today when I try playing the
games by loading them from the Games Panel I get this error:

"This file does not have a program associated with it for performing
this action. Create an association in the Set Associations control
panel."

Do you know what this error is? And how to correct it?

Hi Bill,

Thank you for the update. It seems like the raid is the cause of low
performance. Since the WOW K.O. the raid last time, I suggest you try it
again later. :)

In addition, since the new question about Game Explorer (which is
Start->Game) is not related with the original one and I noticed you posted
a new post on it. I'll reply your question in the new post.
