Bought Premium but need the full HD backup of Ultimate. Will be building a
new system in about 6 months so don't want to waste $160 on this one. If I
upgrade to Ultimate now can I switch Ultimate to the new computer? If so can
I go from Ultimate 32bit to Ultimate 64bit?

What version of premium? Retail or OEM? Retail can be transferred to a new
computer. The Ultimate upgrade is retail so that can be moved but if the
Vista Home Premium is OEM, it's tied by the license agreement to the first
computer on which it's installed and can't be moved, so you'd need a
different qualifying OS to use the Ultimate upgrade on the new computer.

That aside, Ultimate, either upgrade or full retail. comes with both the x86
and x64 DVDs. Either one can be installed with the same product key but you
cannot have both installed at the same time.

If x86 Vista is installed you can then install x64 version, using the
upgrade product key but it cannot be done as an in place upgrade, only a
custom install. The upgrade is started by booting the DVD, it checks that
there is a qualifying OS installed, then offers the custom installation
option. No data or programs are migrated. The old installation is wrapped
up in the windows.old folder.

I'm not sure what this "Premium DVD's upgrade to Ultimate plan" is. Do you
mean the Anytime upgrade? If so you should think twice about that. There
are some restrictions on the Anytime Upgrade license that don't exist on the
regular upgrade license. I believe you can only transfer it to a new device
once, whereas the retail upgrade can be moved as many times as you want as
long as it's only on one device at at time.

It would be better I think to shop for the lowest price you can get for an
ultimate upgrade. In that box will be the DVDs for both x86 and x64.

Sure backup the data and even better use a drive imaging system such as
Acronis True Image Home v. 10 to image the old system, but also use Windows
Easy Transfer (WET) to save data and settings on the USB drive, then after
Vista is reinstalled and the apps installed use WET to bring back the data
and settings.

To uninstall an OS you format the drive. Any one of a number of ways to do
that.

When you say "install complete USB backup" do you mean restore an image?
I'm not sure if you will be able to restore an image of Vista to a new drive
on a system with a new board and CPU, and have it boot. You might have to
start the installation process / upgrade over.

Yes I was talking about the Anytime upgrade. Did not know it was
restricted. I'm not about to go and buy a new version of Ultimate for $250
and throw the $150 Premium upgrade in the trash. That would be $400 to
upgrade from XP to Ultimate. If that is my only option to do what I need
then it looks like I'm just stuck. Guess I will have to revert back to XP or
hope and pry that noting happens to my HD until someone (Ghost) comes out
with a backup program that will do the whole HD and restore from boot.

I can't believe that MS doesn't offer a retail type upgrade from Premium to
Ultimate 32 bit/64 bit. This is very disappointing.

Just a thought but if I bought a new Ultimate upgrade and un-installed
Premium could someone else use it and install as their upgrade or is it
forever licensed to me?

Yes, if the Premium is retail then it can be transferred to another party.
All you have to do is read the license agreement to see the conditions.
From Start, type winver, enter. Click on the Microsoft Software License
Terms link. in the About Windows dialog box.
