Can't speak for Ubuntu, but I can tell you that I had one hell of a time
setting up Fedora 11 on a dual boot with XP recently! Fedora 11 made a
change from the previous version how/where it makes the boot partition
active. Machine would not boot and it turned out to be a colossal
hemorrhoid!

Or, a HDD for each OS, controlled by the BIOS.
Grub2 will detect them if update-grub is run, but a simple added entry to
/etc/default/grub fixes that.

I like to be able to switch from one OS to another by turning my head,
not rebooting.

Of course not because it's not the same thing.

I don't like dual boots either, I personally use virtual machines for
multiple OSes. This was for some contract work I picked up recently,
and that's what the customer wanted.

You are right. TV has social value and Ubuntu doesn't!

Just like when you complete a "job". You say to the customer, "That will be
129 Euros for Ubuntu, and 65 Euros for the installation"

So the simple answer is a fast machine running Ubuntu with XP and Vista
in virtual machines and use the "Cube", no head turning required
especially with dual monitors. Unfortunately the MS Virtual software
does not like running Ubuntu as a VM, or at least it didn't.

Everybody is happy, licenses are paid - no problem.
