Windows 7 upgrade advisor fails on install

"Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor ran into an unexpected error. Please
reinstall... and try again." (upon run attempt)

a. I hope it didn't hurt itself when it ran into....nevermind.
b. Reinstall = same result.
c. Re-download and reinstall = same result.
d. It does appear in installed programs.

Microsoft will not support due to =OEM= Vista upgrading to retail Win 7
Upgrade. Gateway will not support due to "its a Microsoft software
problem."

Web search = no help.

Machine is a laptop Gateway M-6881, 3GB, 2.2GHz core2duo.

Do I just forget about Win 7?

You purchased through Gateway? Call them. Did you do a clean install? If
you did an upgrade, I suggest doing a clean install.

Re: Windows 7 upgrade advisor fails on install

1. Read the original message. Gateway says "not our problem."

2. I have done NO upgrade yet. I was trying to run the advisor first.
Are you saying to proceed with a clean install even though upgrade
advisor won't even run?

Have you tried right-click 'Run as administrator'?
Or turn UAC off.
Or forget about the Upgrade Advisor and install Win7
anyway and see how it goes, provided you have a backup
strategy and can re-install Vista if things go wrong.

Re: Windows 7 upgrade advisor fails on install

The Vista Advisor didn't work for me very well on one machine and warned
about non problems and missed some real problems but I have slide in
drive trays so it was no problem to try and Vista worked fine once I
replaced the graphics card (Which I knew I'd have to do anyway).

Sadly it's not so easy with a laptop so you need to make two backups or
make sure you have reinstall disks or something from Gateway...

I think W7 will work fine for you provided that Gateway didn't do
something stupid and I think you will find it leaner and faster than
Vista, but unless you can find someone who's proven it on your model
proceed with caution.
